Owing to the link member p being U-shaped in cross section and closed underneath, the joint can again bey closedon one .side only namely outwards, while in the opposite direction it acts rigidly beyond the extended position. lTopprevent the outer rib o2 from swinging round, the mouth r of the link is made elastic so that it will catch over the cross section of the rib parts 0 and 02 elastically and hold them securely in the extended position. The link may of course also lie inside the U-shaped rib so that its mouth catches elastically over the pivots and projecting ends of the link.y

The constructional form of the umbrella is in other respects the same as in an umbrella of the ordinary kind. Struts s are pivoted on the one hand to the ribs o and 0n the other hand to a sleeve adapted to slide on the stick i. e. the ordinary runner so as to enable the cover of the umbrella to be opened out as shown in Fig. 6. The ribs o are likewise. pivoted in the usual way toa crown u which however is of dierent construction than the type hitherto emn ployed. lt is screwed to the tube z" so that the point a of the stick can pass through it when the stick is extended. After the stick has been thus extended andv locked the runner t is brought into its usual position over the springs'nf, n2 on the handle CZ and the ribs o2 then turned down with the cover a@ attached to themuntil the links p have snapped into place. The umbrella can then be opened 'in the usual way. j

I claim l. An umbrella, embodying a stick which comprises a plurality of'sections jointed together at their ends for pivotal movement into and out of mutual alinement; locking tubes slidable on said sections to cover and uncover the joints; means for limiting vthe movements ot' the tubes so disposed that in' one extreme position the joints are just exposed, while in their other extreme position the tubes completely cover the joints; and catches, independent of said 'limiting means, for holding the tubes in the secondnamed extreme position. f

An umbrella, embodying a stick which comprises a plurality of sections jointed'tm gether at their ends for pivotal movement into and out of mutual'alinement; locking tubes vslidable on said sections to cover and' uncover the joints and provided with'lon gitudinal slots; stop pins fixed to said sections and projecting into said slots to limit the extent of movement of the tubes, the slots having a length such that in one ex treme position of the tubes the joints are just exposed, while in their other extreme position the tubes completelyV cover the joints; and catches, independent of said stop pins, for holding the tubes inthe sec:L ond-nained extreme position.
