LOGK-BOOFING-FORMING MACHINE.
Applicationfiled June 26, 1926. Serial No. 118,721.
The object of this invention is. to provide a machine for producing folds in the edges of a rooting sheet permitting of engagement with acent sheets. and to effect this result by the use of a stationary bar having a V- shaped channel in one edge thereof, and'to provide in connection with the bar specified, a movable complementary bar also having a V-shaped channel in one edge, the walls of the respective channels converging, and the edge portion of one bar being adapted to enter the channel portion of the oppositely located bar,means also being provided for advancing the movable bar towards the sta tionary bar.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the position of the movable bar,
and further to provide means for throwing out a clutch when the forming bars are separated. Y
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed,-itbeing ,understood that modifications-maybe made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The machine includes a frame mounted upon inverted channel elements 11 and 12, and mounting in bearings 13 a horizontal shaft 14, Also mounted on said frame 10 are frames of the form-shown at the right in Figure 2, and shown in top plan in Figure 1, these frames each including a leg member 15, an upper bend 16 and a downwardly extending inclined portion 17 over which the metallic sheets are to be fed. Mounted by suitable means on the main frame is a stationary bar 23 providedwith a channel portion 24, the walls of which converge inwardly, and opposite this bar 23 is a movable bar 25 having a channel 26 formed in the edge thereof, this channel also having converging walls, and the upper walls of each channel being reversely inclined, and likewise the walls of the lower The bars 23 and 25,:constituting forming devices, are not in the same plane, but the edge portion 23 of bar 23 is opposite the central portion of the channel 26 in bar 25, so that when the bar last named is advanced against the sheet-of material to be formed, a double fold of the form illustrated in Figure 3, or substantially that form, will be produced.
I In Figures 3 and 4, the folds are designated 28 and 29, and in Figure 4, it is to be assumed that pressure has been applied in any suitable manner, to bring the folds into closer relation than shown in Figure 3. A corrugation 30 in the sheet may be produced, either before or after the folds 28 and 29, are formed.
Connected with forming bar'25, or rather mounting that 'bar, is a bar 32 including a bar 25 is directly mounted. Connected with bar v32 are yokes or the like 34, which have pivotal connection withrods 36 adjustably mounted in elements 37 and retained in an adjusted position by lockfnuts 38. These elements 37 are connected at 89 with eccentric straps 40, the straps passing around eccentric members 41. The elements 41 are mounted on shaft 14, and the rotation of the shaft provides for the movement of the bar 25 thru the connections specified.
A collar 44 is splined on shaft 14, and constitutes a clutch element cooperating with clutch element 45 on the hub of a gear wheel 46 meshing with pinion 47 on shaft 48. This shaft last named carries pulley wheels 49 and 50, thru either of which drive is imparted to shaft 14.
In order to throw out the clutch at the proper time, that is, whenthe bars 25 and 23 are separated, collar 44 is provided with an extension or lug 52, this device serving the purpose of a finger and being engaged by the end of head 53 formed with a bevelled portion or cam surface 54. Head 53 is carcutaway portion 33, in which the forming" ried bysteIn 55, and the latter is moved upwardly for the purpose of throwing head 53 into operative position so that the clutch may be thrown out when finger 52 is in the position of Figure 5, at which time the bar 25 will be separated from bar 23. A spring 56 encircles shaft 14: between the bearing 13 and collar 44, and controls in part a movement of said collar.
The stem is controlled by an arm 58 pivoted at 59 and having connection by link 60 with foot operated lever 61, the outer end of which is normally retained in an upper position by spring 62, it being understood that'pressure upon the pedal 63 depresses the outer end of lever 61 for controlling the position of head 53 with reference to the engagement thereof with finger 52;
. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described. a stationary forming plate having a longitudinal channel therein, a movable forming plate-having a channel therein, the channels opening towards each other, and the edge wall of one channel being positioned to enter the central portion of the other channel, means for advancing the movable channel plate towards the stationary channel plate and means for supporting the work in an inclined plane extending upwardly from the plane of the stationary forming plate.
' 2. In a machine of the class described, a
stationary forming plate having a longitu-' dinal channel therein, a movable forming I plate having a channel therein, the channels opening towards each other, and the edge -wa1l of one channel being positioned to enter the central portion of the other channel, means for supporting the work in an inclined plane extending upwardly from the plane of the stationary forminguplate, and means i including an automatically and mechanically controlled clutch element, for advancing the movable plate to position for bend ing a metallic sheet between this element and the stationary plate.
8. In a machine of the class described. a stationary forming plate and a movable forming plate, these plates having channels in the approaching edge portions thereof,

4. Ina machine of the class described, a stationary forming plate having a longitudinal channel therein, a movable forming plate having a channel therein, the channels opening towards each other, and the edge wall of one channel being positioned to enter the central portion of the other channel, and means for advancing the movable channel plate towards the stationary channel plate, said plate advancing means including clutch elements and pedal controlled means-longitudinally movable, for engaging one of the clutch elements and moving said elementout of engagement with the other.
