UNITED STATES 1,642,149 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. HAYNES, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TQJOSEIPH H. SWATHMEY, OF HARRISONVILLE, MISSOURI. V
FLOAT.
Application filed December 30, 1926. Serial No. 157,960.
My invention relates to improvements in floats. It is particularly well adapted for use as an amusement device for taking swimming exercises, but it is also adapted for use as a life preserver;
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a floatof the :kind described, which is simple, cheap, durable, strong, not-liable to get out of order, which :may be .readily and quickly assembled for use or disassem- Fig. 4 is a perspective of one of the. tube engaging members.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modification which employs but a single inflated tube.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, 1 designates two air filled annular tubes, preferably of the type employed as inner tubes in automobile tires provided each with a filling tube 2 of usual type.
In use the tubes 1 are disposed in elliptical form and have respectively mounted in them two pairs of substantially semicircular memberS 3, each of which is provided in its arcuate edge with an arcuate groove 1 adapted to receive the tube in which it is mounted. The opposite edge of each member 3 is provided with two grooves 5 and 6 disposed transversely to each other, the groove 5 being transverse to the plane of the groove 4 and having a recess 7 Fig.4.
Two cross bars 8 and 9 have one set of two dowel pins 10 adapted to fit in the re-v cesses 7 of the grooves 5 in which the bar is mounted.
The inner edge of the bar 9 is provided with a recess 9" adapted to receive oneendof a center board 11, the other end of which extends through a slot 12 in the cross bar 8.
'The latter is provided with a transverse hole 13 intersecting the slot 12 adapted-to receive a bolt 14, which is adapted to be extended through any of a longitudinal row of holes 15 in the center board 11. The bolt 14 may have on it a nut 16 for holding the boltin its operative position, Figs. 1 and 2. The board 11 may have in its edges two hand hold notches 17 After the members 3 have been assembled with the cross bars 8 and 9,'the center board 11 and the, bolt 14, as above described, the tubes 1 are inflated. The float will now be ready for use, the person using it lying on the center board between the tubes 1.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, but one tube 1 is used, it having mounted in it two of the members 3, as in the other form ofmy inven' tion. The ends of the center board 11 are then respectively fitted in the grooves 6, the
tube being inflated after the parts are-assent bled.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. A float of the kind described comprising two annular inflatable tubes, two pairs of peripherally grooved members respectively-mounted in said tubes with the tubes fitted in the grooves of said members, two cross bars respectively connected to the members of opposite pairs, and a center board connecting said cross bars between said tubes.
2. A float of the kind described comprising two annular inflatable tubes, two pairs of peripherally grooved members respectively mounted in said tubes with the tubes fitted in the grooves of said members, two
cross bars respectively connected to the members of opposite pairs, one of said cross bars having in its inner edge a recess, a center board having one end seated in said recess, and a bolt extending through said board and the other cross bar.
3. Afloat of the kind described comprising two annular'inflatable tubes, two pairs of peripherally grooved members respectively mounted in said tubes with the tubes fitted in the grooves of said members, two cross bars respectively engaging said members of opposite pairs, a center board having one end bearing against and supported by one of said cross bars and having a longitudinal row of transverse holes, and a bolt extending through the other cross bar and adapted to be extended through any of said holes.
4. A float of the kind described comprising two annular inflatable tubes, two pairs of members each having in one edge a peripheral arcuate groove and in its opposite edge a transverse groove provided with a recess, said pairs of members being mounted respectively in said tubes with said tubes mounted in said arcuate grooves, two cross bars fitted respectively in the transverse grooves of said members, each cross bar having two dowel pinsrespectively fitted in the recesses of the adjacent ones of said members, one oi said cross bars having a recess in its inner edge, a center board fitted at one end in said edge recess of said cross bar and having a longitudinal row of holes, and a bolt extending through the other cross bar and adapted to be extended tl'irough any of said holes.
5. In a float of the kind described, two pairs of members each having in one edge an arcuate groove adapted to have an inflated tube fitted therein, and having in its other edge a transverse groove having a recess, two cross bars adapted to be respec tively fitted in opposite ones of said pairs and provided each with two dowel pins adapted to be fitted in the recesses of the adjacent members, one of the cross bars having an edge recess, the other bar having a transverse hole, a center board adapted tov have one end fitted in said edge recess and having a longitudinal row of holes, and a bolt adapted to be extended through the hole in said cross bar and through any of said holes in said center board.
6. In a float of the kind described, a member having in one edge an arcuate groove adapted to receive an inflated tube, and in its opposite edge having a transverse groove having a recess and adapted to receive a cross bar having a dowel pin adapted to be inserted in said recess.
7. In a float of the kind described, a member having in one edge an arcuate groove adapted to receive an inflated tube, and in its opposite edge having a recess parallel with the plane of said groove and adapted to receive one end of a center board.
8. In a float of the kind described, a member having in one edge an arcuate groove adapted to receive an inflated tube, and in its opposite edge having two grooves transverse to each other and adapted to respectively receive the end of a center board and a cross brace.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. 7 7
