LOCKING DEVICE FOR THE DRIVE OF MACHINES WITH PRINTING- 0R FEELING MECHANISMS.
Application filed July 17, 1924, Serial Iio.
This invention relates to the drive of machines of the kind which comprise printing mechanisms for printing introduced labels or feeling mechanisms for feeling punched cards and which are adapted to be operated by depressing a'releasing key or adjusting a lever.
In order to prevent the operation of the machine from taking place before a label to be printed or a card to be perforated has been introduced, there is provided in connection with the releasing key a feeling stamp which feels the guide of the label and thereby controls the release of the machine-drive.
The drawing illustrates as an embodiment of the subject-matter of the invention its application to a cash register.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device,
Fig. 2 is an elevation of a part of Fig. 1, showing some elements in a different position;
Fig. 3 is a plan View corresponding to Fig. l;
Figs. 4 to 7 are views of details.
The release of the operation of the cash register is effected by means of keys a The locking device of the operating shaft itself is not shown because it does not form part of this invention. Pins (1? of the keys act on a strap 0, of a rocking member a which is mounted for swinging movement at a and which has a spring or attached to its arm a. A connecting rod (1. which is pivoted to the arm a has a bent-01f portion a which serves as a stop. The left-hand end of the connecting rod is pivoted to an angle lever a a which is freely rotatable on a.
shaft 6 The arm a of the same has a bent-off portion a" which serves as a stop. A double-armed lever 6 b which is fixed to the shaft b is connected with the angle lever 01 a by means of a torsional spring b"(Fig. 3) in such a manner as to cause a in b of the lever arm 6 to act on the stop a of the angle lever. The right-hand end b of the lever arm I) is bent off and adapted to cooperate with the stop a of the connecting rod a Arranged underneath the lever arm 6 is a roller 0 (Fig. 3) which is carried by a toothed wheel a and executes a circular movement along with the toothed wheel during each operation of the machine. The lever arm b is provided with 726,643, and in Germany August 1, 1923.
a tongue I) (Figs. 1 and 2) which cooperates with. a pin a of the connecting rod a An arm b which is likewise rigidly fastened to the shaft 1) has pivoted to it a feeling stamp 6 (see also Figs. 4 and 5) possessing a'slot which is engaged by a sta tionary guide pin d Arranged below the ,feeler is the stationary label guide d the plate (i of which supports the introduced label Z. The plate (I is provided with a recess cl through which the toe b of the feeling stamp 12 can be passed it" the recess 03 is not covered by an introduced label. Arranged below the label guide d is the set of types 6 and above the guide the printing punch I. The printing punch has its movements imparted to it by means of a doublearmed lever f which ismounted for rocking motion on a stationary shaft d and the arm f of which is pivoted to the rod f" which.
is connected with the driving mechanism of the machine. A pin f of the printing unch f is in engagement with a guide fork g the slotted arm 9 of which is engaged by a pin g of a setting member 9 (see also Figs. 6 and 7) which determines the position of the guide fork and consequently the direction of movement of the printing punch f. Fig. 1 shows the guide fork g in the normal position in which the printing punch 7 may be moved towards the types 6 and the printing of the introduced label Z effected. The setting member g is rotatable with the key pin g and adapted to be reversed by 180 degrees in the direction of the arrow pby means of a key so as to render inoperative the movement of the printing punch I. The setting member g is held in one or the other of its limit positions by a spring g. F astened to the setting member is a locking pin g which, upon the setting member being reversed, comes into the path of a stop member 6 of the arm I) (Fig. 2). The guide fork g has connected to it a locking strap 9* which obstructs the label guide in the reversed position of the setting member 9*.
The operation of the device is as follows: If labels should be printed upon the transaction effected by the cash register, the set ting member g must be in the position according to Fig. 1. Upon depressing one of the keys 0. the connecting rod a with the stop a and the arm m of the, angle lever a, a are moved forwards contrary 'to the action of the spring a while the parts 6 to b are arrested by the feeler I) striking on the introduced label. The arrangement is so that, when the said parts are being arrested, the locking member I) (position b is not yet in the path of the stop a, thereby allowing the parts a to a to be moved into their limit position. The fully depressed key 0. causes now the re-' lease of the cash register operation by which the printing punch f is moved against the set of types e and the introduced label Z printed.
If in the position of the setting member according to Fig. 1 no label has been introduced by mistake, the feeler b Wlll not be stopped upon depressing one of the keys 0, but it will continue its movement through the recess d. The locking member 6 moved along with the feeler b will now enter into the path of the stop a (position 6) before the parts a to a will have been moved into the limit position. Therefore it is not possible to fully depress the key a and the operation of the cash register will not be released.
In order to allow operations of the cash register to take place without having to introduce a label to be printed, it is necessary to turn the key'pin g for 180 degrees in the direction of the arrow 12 by means of a key. The locking pin 9 is thereby brought into the path of the stop member I) (Fig. 2). \Vhen a key a is now depressed, the parts b to I) will be arrested by the stop member 12 striking against the locking pin g" before the locking member I) (intermediate position b) will have been able to come into the path of the stop a". There fore the key a may again be fully depressed and an o eration of the cash register take place wit out a label having'been intro duced. By reversing the setting member g" the guide fork g has also been brought into another position. The printing punch f is thereby prevented from coming into touch with the coloured types e in operations of the cash register without an introduced label. Besides, by the reversing of the setting member g the label guide d has been obstructed inasmuch as the right-hand end of the locking strap has been caused to bear on the plate (i of the label guide. It is therefore Impossible to insert a label when operations of the cash register take place with which the movements of the printing punch f are mo erat1ve.
f operations of the cash register should again take place in which labels are to be printed, this is only possible after the printing punch f has been returned into operative position by a rotation of the key pin g in a direction opposite to the arrow 39 After the depressed key has been released in well-known manner during the operation of the cash register and rushed back, the parts a to a" and along with them the parts 6 to b are returned by the action of the spring a. This return movement is assisted in and secured by the roller 0 which returns the parts I) to b into the position of rest by acting on the arm 12 before the revolution of the wheel 0 comes to an end. During this movement the tongue I) acts on the pin a of the connecting rod a and thus secures also a positive return of the parts a to a I claim:
