IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS, GRIDDLES, &c., OF STOVE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,190, dated June 8, 1875 application filed May 25, 1875.
which the following is a specification:
Heretofore the covers, griddles, centerpieces or bridges, and other movable parts of stove-tops have usually and, so far as my knowledge extends, invariably been made of cast-iron. It is well known that such castmetal articles are very liable to be cracked and broken, as, for instance, if water be dropped on them when they are hot. I have discovered that this defect can be completely remedied by making them of malleable iron that is to say, by first casting them and then subjecting them to the known process of malleableization. In this way, while retaining all the advantages on the score of ease and economy due to the manufacture by casting, I obtain an article which is not open to the objections above noted.
The principal advantages gained by my invention are, first, lightness, the weight of the article not exceeding two-thirds, and, in some cases, one-half that required for a similar castiron article; second, non-liability of breakage,
either when handled or when used on the stove or range. My malleable-iron covers have been taken from the stove when red-hot, and in this state plunged into cold water without the least injurious eifect.
The accompanying drawing represents a cover made in accordance with my invention.
It will be understood, as above stated, that my invention applies not only to the covers, but to the other movable parts of stove or range tops.
I do not deem it necessary to describe the malleableizin g process, as that is well known. To carry my invention into effect all that is needed is to cast the cover or other part in the usual way, and then to subject it to the process of malleableizing.
W hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cover, griddle, or other movable part of the top of a stove or range made of malleable iron, substantially as described.
