IMPROVEMENT m TONGUE-SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,175, dated June 8, 1875 application filed April 24, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES JARRELL, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tongue-Support for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention has relation to improvements in wagon-tongues.

The object of the invention is to devise a means whereby the-weight of the tongue will be taken off the necks of the horses, and at the same time render its movements duly elastic.

To this end the nature of the invention consists in a spring, which is adjustably secured to a vibrating wagon-tongue and to the sandbar of the body, whereby the tongue'will be adequately supported, and its weight taken off the animals, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the tongue of an ordinary road-wagon, which is secured between the hounds by means of a bolt, a, so that it shall have due vertical vibration. B represents an angular supportingbrace, formed of wrought metal, having an eye, I), at its angle and straddle legs, which are provided with eyes on their lower extremities, by means of which it is securely fastened in p0sition-one pair of legs to sandbar G, and the other to the bolt a, upon which the tongue vibrates in relation to the hounds. By this means the supporting-brace is held rigid, and is adapted to support aheavy tongue, and sustain successfully the shocks caused by the violent jerking from side to side of the tongue, produced in passing over a rough or rocky road. S represents a strong metallic spring, which is hooked into or otherwise suitably secured to eye I) at the upper end of support B, and is rigidly secured to a link, 0, the other end of which is attached by means of a nut or head, 0, to a turn-buckle, D. This buckle has in its lower end a screw-threaded perforation adapted to receive the screwthreaded end of a bolt, (1, which is pivoted in any suitable manner to a plate, E, rigidly secured to the tongue at a point in front of the hounds.

Byturning buckle D in a given direction bolt cl will be forced into it, thus taking up the slack of spring S and link 0, and causing the weight of the tongue to be supported from upright or brace B. By this means the weight of the tongue will be transferred to the sand-bar of the wagon, and when from any unusual jolt the tongue is caused to vibrate vertically, as at times will occur, the yielding of spring S will cause its movements to be gentle and easy, and the thumping and jerking thereof, so annoying to a spirited team, to be effectually done away with.

In lieu of the steel spring S, above described, I may sometimes, especially in light Work, use a rubber spring; and, in this event, I propose to do away with link 0 altogether, substituting in lieu thereof a connection, within which will be arranged a rubber spring, through which, and through one end of the connection, a headed bolt will pass, which bolt will be secured to turn-buckle D. The other end of the connection being secured to upright B, a very elastic and efficient ton guesupporter will be produced.

When from long use spring S becomes in a degree inoperative, so as to allow the tongue to sag, this defect may be remedied by giving a turn or two to buckle D, taking up the slack produced by the yielding of the said spring, and again affording proper support to the tongue for the purpose of relieving the animals of its weight.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a tongue-support, the angular support B,

spring S, link 0, and turn-buckle D, in combination with a vibratory tongue, A, substantially as specified.
