This invention relates to weather-strips and relates more particularly to weatherstrips for. use upon vehicle windows.
It is an object of the invention to pro- 5 vide a weather-strip for a vertically slidable 4vehicle window which in the raised position of the window closure will establish a seal against admission of moisture to the well or chamber ,receiving said closure when lowered, said weather-strip having a iexibility permitting a considerable range of location of theclosure as regards its raised position and maintaining the seal throughout said range. The invention consists further in the specific structural features of the improved weather-strip. .s
In the drawing Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a 20. portion of a vehicle window showing the improvedweather-strip establishing a sealv with the closure of said window in raised position; l Figure 2 is a perspective view of a portion of said strip.
In these views the reference character A designates a vertically slidable vehicle Window closure formed by a plate of glass to the bottom edge of which is secured a metallic channel strip B. An edge portionof said channel strip is laterally extended .to form a downwardly inclined lip C to co-act with a weather-strip carriedby the outside sill member lD of the window. rlhus, saidV member'has its upper edge portion projecting toward the glassA as indicated at .E and to the interior face of said member there is secured a flexible strip F, the upper marginal portion of which forms 40 a flap G normally downwardly inclined. 'As the closure A approaches its uppermost limited osition, the metallic lip C engages the flexl le flap Gr and forms therewith av weather seal to prevent admission of moisture to the chamber H, entered by the closure A when lowered. The flap G is adapted to yield upwardly responsive to the upthrust of the lip C so as to maintain engagement with said lipthrough a considerable range of movement of the closure A so that the latter is not closely restricted as regards its closed position. Thus the closed 1923. Serial No. 634,132.
Thus,

The described strip has sufficient stiffness that the Hap G will tend always, when released ,`to return to the normal position shown in full lines in Figure 1. One of the advantages of the described weather-strip is its lack of rebound. That is vto say, that the Hap G while tending always to return to its normal downwardly inclined position, does not act with suicient force against the lip C to tend to shift the closure downwardly when the latter is raisedv to a desired position for latching. Furthermore, the described weather-strip is` of inexpensive construction and is adapted to be easily attached. is considered preferable to one formed entirely of rubber since the fabric reinforces the rubber and prolongs the life of the strip. The rubber is' essential, however, both for water-proofing and to give resiliency-to the Hap. y
IVhat I claim as my invention is:
l. Thecombination with a vertically slidable closure and a weather-strip carried thereby, of a frame member having anupper portion projecting towards said closure, and a weather-strip secured to thel interior face of said frame member having a flexible flap formed by its upper portion normally projecting downwardl at an` acute angle to' the body of the strip for engage-- ment by the weather-strip -upon the` closure and actuable by the latter strip between Sil said normal position und a limiting position of Contact with said projecting portion oi' the freine member.
2. The combination with :L vertically sliduble closure, and :i weather strip carried thereby` of u frame member having an upper portion project-ing towards said closure, and a weather strip formed of layers of rubber and fabric and having a lower portion secured to the' interior face of said frame member, and an upper portion projeoting towards said closure for engagement by said first mentioned weather strip.
