This invention relates to a sash re lating device, and has special reference to t at class of devices used in the body, wallsand doors of vehicles, particularly automobiles for adrelative to said walls and doors;

As set forth inthe beginning, .the sash' regulating device may be mounted in a hollow wall for raising a sash to and from an opening in the'wall, and as showing the adaptation of my invention to a door, that may form part of an automobile body, the reference numeral 1- denotes a door eframe having a sash opening 2 and a sash well or ocket 3. Between the opening 2 and the well 3 isa sill 4 having a sash opening 5 and movable through said opening is a sash 6 edges slidable in channel.

The casing or supporting member 13 has a detachable wall 16 and mounted in said-lwall,v adjacent the upper end thereof is a bushing 17 for a rotatable drum sha-ft or arbor 18 which has its inner end u ared or provided with 'facets so that the 'end wall 19 of a drum 20' may be fixed to saidV arbor by. a nut drum 20 convolutlon attached to the are attached, as at 22 the ends of the cables or flexible members 23 and 24 which are re- 'versely wound upon the drum so that when one cable is wound thereon the other cable will be unwound. The cable 23 vis trained over a sheave or pulley 25 depending from the upper wall of the casing 13 and the cable 24 is trained under the sheave or ulley 26 mounted on the bottom wall'of t e casing 13, said cables being connected at the head 10 and attached thereto by any suitable fastening means, designated 27.
On the arbor 18 Vagainst the detachable wall 16- is4 a toothed wheel 28 normally engaged by a spring pressed paWl 29 pivotally mounted on the detachable wall 16, said pawl having a right angularly disposed caml 30 projecting over the end of the -arbor 18. Sli able on the innerI end ofthe arbor 18 is the socket portion 31 of a crank or handle 32, said socket portion having a substantiallyl V-shaped slot into which extends a pin 34 of the arbor. The inner end of the; socket portion 31 has a peripheral flange 35 adapted to engage-the cam 30 ofthe pawl or latch 29 and raise said pawl out of engagement with the toothed wheel 28.
vBy swinging the crank or handle 32 in either direction, the. crank or handle 32 moves inwardly, towards the wallv 16, causingthe peripheral flange 35 to elevate the pawl 30. This inward movement of the crank or handle 32 is accomplished by virtue of the pin and. slot connection between saidV handle and the arbor, and by rotating the crankv or handle 32 the sash may be raised or lowered.
In the drum 20 is a counterbalance in the form of a spiral band spring` 36 which has its inner convolution attached to the stationary bushing 17,- vas at 37, and its outer of the drum 20, as -at 38. The' expansive :force of the spring is adapted to assist in raising the sash6 and when the sash is lowered the spring is `wound and placed under additional tension.`
The inner panel or facing 39vof the door yframe has an opening 40 providing clearance for the arbor 18 and the spring pressed .'pawl or latch 29.
Reference will now be had to Figs. 8 to 11 showing what may bev-considered a simple form of my sash regulating device. Instead of using the casing 13 a single supporting peripheral Vwall The su porting member 41 adjacent its .upper en has an opening 43 and mounted on said supporting member, at the opening 43, 1s .a race member 44 and a lock housing,

and the hubv portion 46 is suitably fixed on the shank 48 of an arbor 49 mounted in.an inner race member 50 supported by antifrictional bearingsin the lock housing45. The arbor 49 vhas a transverse opening 51 and slidable in said opening is a plunger 52 having teeth 53 to en age teeth 54 formed yon the inner wall ofl t e lock housing 45 as best shown in Fig. 11. The inner en of the plunger .52 hasrastem 55 surrounded by a coiled` expansion springy 56 pressing against the plunger 52-to4 hold it normally in a locked position relative to the housing 45, yet ,permitting of said plunger be' retracted so that the arbor 49 may be turne in either direction in the hous' v tached to the stem 55 and embracing a portion of the arbor 49 is a yoke -57 arranged in a semi-circular recess 58 of a .sleeve or socket portion 59 forming part of the crank or handle 60.J The socket portion 59 is slotted, as at 61, to proyide clearance for the plunger 52 and reniaming. cam portions 62 of the handle socket 59 are adapted to engage the ends of the yoke 57 and shift said yoke when the handle orcrank 60'is turned in either direction.
The outer end of the arbor 49 has a transverse pin 63 extending into a slot 64 of the handle Vsocket 59 to retain the handle socket normally on the arbor and about the handle socket 59 is a sleeve 65 that may be shrunk or otherwise fixed on the handle socket, said sleeve being cut away, as at 66, to provide 'clearance for the plunger 52.
An apertured escutcheon plate or cover 67 may be mounted on the panel 39 to inclose the outer end of the housing 45.
