s. N. COLEMAN HAND CLAMP Filed Aug. 9 l1926 Patented Aug. 30, 1927.

STEPHEN N. COLEMAN, 0F SYLACAUGA, ALAB'AMA.

PATENT' oFFicE.

HAND CLAMP.

Application led August- 9, 1926. Serial No. 128,282.

This invention aims to provide novel means for repairing holes in the uppers of shoes, by means of cement patches," and more specifically, to provide novel means for holdset.

It is within the province of the disclosure yto improve generally and to enhance the utility o f a device of that type to which the invention appertains.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement. of parts and inthe details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Inthe drawings 'Figure 1 shows in elevation, a tool constructed in accordance with the invention,

' parts being 1n sectlon;

handle 5 and a jaw 6; a'nd to form, in the lever 2, a handle 7 and a jaw 8, the j aws'6 and 8 cooperating` with each other.

Presser feet are carried detachably by the jaws 6 and 8. The presser feet are made up of plates 9, preferably of metal, and provided 'with resilient facings 10, which may be made of rubber.- The plates 9 and the facings 10 are curved to parallelism, and are curved to conform to the particular part of the upper of the shoe whereunto the patch is to be applied. Any suitable means may be provided for attaching the plates 9 to the jaws 6 and 8. As shown, the plates 9 have stems 11 which are threaded into the jaws 6 and 8, lock nuts 12-being threaded on the stems 11 and bearing against the jaws 6 and 8 'to hold the plates 9 in place. The construction is such that one set of plates may be detached readily, and be replaced by another set of plates, shaped differently, they objects being, as stated hereinbefore, to proing the patches in place until the cement has vide a device out of which cement patches.v

may be held upon differently shapedparts of the uppers of a sho'e.

When the patch is applied to the shoe` one of the plates 9 is placed inside of the shoe` the other of the plates 9 is placed outside of. the shoe. and the levers 1 vand 2 are operated so that the plates 9 and their faclngs 10 press the patch against the shoe.

A means is provided for holding the handles 5 and 7 against' movement, thereby to compress the patch on the shoe. 'With this end inview` an opening 14 is fashioned in the handle 7. the opening 14 being flared toward its ends, as shown clearly in Figure 3. There is an opening 15 in the handle 5. Through the openings 15 and 14 extends a connection 16, preferably a screw, the connection or screw 16 embodying a head 17 shaped to rock on the-outer surface ofv the handle 7 The connection 16 has an elongated slot 18 through which passes a securing element 19 mounted in the handle 7. The securing element 19 serves to hold the screw 16 permanently assembled with the handle, without preventing the screw from rocking inthe handle. A wheel nut 20 is threaded on the screw 16 and bears in its hub 2l against a boss 22 on the handle 5. Obviously by rotating the wheel nut 20 and advancing it along the screw 16, the handles 5 and 7 may be held together, so that the plates 9 and the facings 10 will press the patch on the shoe.

What is claimed is 1. In' a device for holding cemented patches on shoes whilst the cement is setting, a pair of crossed and pivotally connected levers, parallel plates shaped to conform to the part of the shoe which is being patched,

stems carried by the plates and threaded into the levers at one end thereof, and nutsv threaded on the stems andl engaging the levers to-hold the plates in adjusted positions,v the nuts being located between the plates and the levers, whereby. the outer edges of saidends of the levers may remain plain to facilitate the shifting of either oi said ends, and the corresponding plate, within a shoe.

2. In a device for e holding cemented patches on shoes whilst the cement is setting, a pair of levers crossed upon each other and pivotally connected to form jaws and han-` dles, the handles having openings, the open-- ing in one handle being flared toward its ends, a screw in the openings, and provided with a head shaped to rock on the outer surface of said handle, a nut on the screw and engaging the other handle, a securing element in the first-specified handle, the screw having'an elongated opening which receives the securing element loosely to permit the strain to be carried by the head, and cooperating shoe-patch presser-feet. on the jaws.

In testimony that l claim the foregoingr as my own, l have hereto atixed my signature. t

STEPHEN N. COLEMAN.
