My invention is an improvement in beater rolls, and mountings therefor, and relates particularly to directly driven rolls. In the usual arrangement of beater roll, some adjustment is necessary, between the roll and Y the bed-plate. The roll must be so mounted that it may be moved toward and from the bed-plate. To permit such adjustment, the roll has heretofore been connected to the motor indirectly, or by a flexible connection,
so'that adjustment of the roll will not interfere with the connection.
The doctor blade in the usual construction is arranged at an angle of 45"y to the vertical, and touches the periphery of the roll at an angle such that unbrokenstock assing through between the roll and the bed-plate may force the blade upward and push the curbing out of place. Furthermore, in the usual construction, the beater roll is heavy, rotates slowly and does not act to circulate the stock with the eliiciency that is desirable.
In the present invention, I connect the motor directly with the beater roll, and so mount the parts, that the roll and motor may be adjusted together toward and from the bed-plate, without disturbing the connection between them and may e held in a0 adjusted .position with respect to the bedplate. 'I provide an arrangement of doctor blade so mounted with that unbroken stock passing between the roll and the bed-plate will be cut off cleanly and will be deflected outwardly from the roll.
I also provide a construction of beater roll wherein the blades or knives are integral with the body of the roll, and of a material permitting the ,roll to be of light weight without sacriiice of strength, thereby to allow the roll to be driven at a higher rate of speed, and I so arrange the blades or knives that they impart an active circulation to the stock in the beater. Thus, I attain an increased velocity in circulation of the stock, bythe higher speed of the roll, and by the propelling action of the knives or blades.

In the-present embodiment of the invention, the beater casing 1 is of usual construction, having the longitudinally extending partition 2, and the beater roll 3 is arranged atone side of the partition, bein secured on a spindle 4, which is supporte at its end by pairs of bearing brackets or pillars 5. The bearing brackets are arranged outside. the casing, and the'spindle is journaled at its ends in bearingbars 6 and 6a, which are arranged between the members of the respective pairs, and are adjustablevertically with respect to the said members. The motor 7 for driving 'the beater roll, is connected directl .with the spindle 4, by means of a frangi le connec tion indicated generally at 8. The motor is mounted on the bearing bar 6, which isa substantially triangular plate, having its base arranged betweenthe bearing brackets '5, and having its apex adjacent to the adjacent side of the beater casing.` At ,its apex the bearing bar carries a bearing 9 in which the spindle 4 is journaled, and the frangible connection Slis between the bearing 9 and the motor. The frangible connection is of usual construction, consisting of vsimilar discs, which are connected by pins, adapted to shear under excess strain above a predetermined amount, to release or break the connection between the motor and the beater roll.
'At the point where the spindle 4 passes through the beater casing wall to the motor, a packing gland is provided of rubber, or like flexible material, and so arranged that it does not interfere with the vertical movement of the spindle. The bearing 9 is 'a thrust bearing.
The bearing bar 6a is mounted to move vertically between its bearing brackets or pillars 5 in the same manner as the bar 6. The pillars or bearing brackets 5 are hollow, being in the present instance open frames as shown, and each of the bearing bars is provided at each pillar or bearing susl vthey are rotated, at
meshing with the gears 12. The shafts 13 are journaled in bearin 15, supported by the pillars, and means is provided for simultaneously'rotating the four shafts. The said means is in the form of a shaft 16', which is journaled transversel of the beaterl casing, substantially paral el with'the spindle 4, and the said shaft is supported by bear.

It will be obvious Vthat when the y shaft 16 is rotated 'by means of the hand wheel, the shafts 13 will be simultaneously" rotated in the same direction, and the screw threaded shafts 11 will be turned to raise or lower the bearing bars 6 and 6a. Thus -both ends of the spindle will be simultaneously raised or lowered, the spindle axis remaining alwa s, horizontal.
The doctor b ade in the usual construction is arranged at an angle of about to the horizontal, and it touches the beater roll at an' angle such that unbroken stock passing through between the roll and bedj plate may force the blade upward, and push the curbing outl of place. In the present construction, I suspend the doctor blade indicated at 21 at a point such that when the free edge of thel blade touches the beater r'oll, the' blade willbe almost or entirely vertical. The hinge connection asindicated at 22 is in a plane which is tangential to the roll. In addition the blade is so arranged that the free edge thereof engages the beater roll below the center thereof, and between the backfall 23 and the roll. Mechanism is provided for adjusting the free edge of the blade toward and from the roll. The said mechanism is in the form .of screw rods 24, hinged at one end to the blade, and passino through fixed angle brackets 25 near the otlier end. The rod is engaged by a Vnut 26 on the op osite side of the bracket from the blade. twill be understood that a rod is provided at each end of the blade. With this arrangement, the bladel cuts the stock clean from the roll, and there is no possibility of.4 unbroken stock pushing the beaters. makes possible a direct power reading on 12e blade out of' place. With the bladel arlranged as above specified, it is possible to A increase the height ofthe backfall, and to make a lar er chamber in rear ofthe same.
The pre erred form of `beater 'roll is 70 shown particularly in Figure 3. The roll 1s an integral construction, preferably of manganese steel, and it is rovided with longitudinally extending bla es 27, of substantially uniform thickness and inclined y or curved in a direction opposite to the' direction of normal rotation of the beater roll.
The curved construction of the blades a-ssists in cutting' the stock, and in propelling the same. Because of its integralcOnStrucso v i tion and the strength of the material used, the roll may be" made smaller than with the usual construction, and may be driven at a higher speed.' The blades lact upon the stock. in somewhat the same manner as va e5 centrifugal pump, increasing' the velocity of the circulation, which is also increased by the high speed of the roll.
In normal operation, power is supplied Ito the motor 7 to drive spindle A4 directly and 9o rotates beater roll 3 in a clockwise direction 'as viewed in-,Fig 3. The doctor blade 21 may be adjusted by turning the screw rod 24 so that the free endof thefdoctor blade will tick against the free cutting edges of 9 5' the blades 27 on the beater roll. The rotation of the beater roll causes the stock` to circulate beneath the beater roli and be propelled over the backfall 23 and around the partition 2 to again pass beneath thebeater loo l roll. l
' TheA use of a'beater roll of a diameter smaller than is customary allows a greater number of revolutions per minute, and thereb makes possible the use of a high speed e ectric motor. The cost of such a high speed motor is less than'that of a low s eed motor. There is, of course, complete e imi-' nation of line shaftin belts, etc. with much` economy in power. are being driven by belts from line shafting in conformity with present standard practice, the cloggin' or breaking of one beater may necessitate s utting down the whole line lof beaters, whereas with the construction therein proposed each beater is a separate unit, and its motor switch can be opened without in any way interfering .with other The 'present arrangement also each beater where that is desirable, and, of
course, reduces friction loss, beltmaintenance, lubrication cost, etc., as compared with more general practice. The eiiciency of circulationof stock is also greatly enhanced by the improved construction of the knives or blades 27 forming the outer pe-V riphery of the beater roll. These knives or blades are so curved as to cause the particles of stock to be thrown by centrifugal forcel 130. l

This velocity together with the increased speed of rotation attainedwith my improved construction of beater roll bring about a far greater amount of circulation of stock than has heretofore been obtainable.
The improved form of doctor blade is approximately positioned to insure a clean cutting olf of stock from the revolving beater roll, and brin about a better circulation of stock ,inasmuc as a larger chamber will be left over the backfall 23 as an aid to the increased eiciency in circulation of stock. The new form of doctor blade will not permit large chunks of stock to pass over` the roll, but will cause them to recirculate before passing under the cutting edges of on the beater roll.

1. In combination, a beater roll and a motor having their axes in alinement, a connection between the motor and the roll for. driving the same directly, said connection adapted to shear under a predetermined stress, and means for moving themotor an the roll vertically while retaining the alined axes horizontal.
2. In direct driven beater roll, vthe -com-V bination with the roll and the motor connected therewith to drive the same directly, of means for simultaneously moving the 'motor and the roll vertically while holding the axes of the roll and motor horizontal.
3. In direct driven beater roll, the combination with the roll and the motor connected therewith to drive the same directly, of means for simultaneously moving the motor and the roll vertically while holding the axes of the roll and motor horizonta and a frangible connection between the motor and the roll adapted to shear under a predetermined stress.
4. In direct driven beater roll construction, thecombination with the roll and the motor, and the spindle upon which the roll is mounted, of means motor andthe adjacent end of the spindle, means for supporting theopposite end of the spindle, and means for simultaneously adjusting the two said supporting means vertically.
5.
