JOSEPH C. COOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM HENRY ROE, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKING-TUBES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 163,976, dated Jane 1, 1875; application filed December 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. COOK, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and do hereby declare that the following is a fuil, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a pipe, constructed in the form of a cigar, made of wood or other material, when in combination with a non-porous or other lining firmly secured and held in position by a non-conducting packing, in connection with a plug or end piece inserted in the larger end, so constructed as to represent the burnt end of a cigar, or cigar-ashes, together with a mouthpiece of horn or other material to represent a holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure is a side view of my pipe; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents a hollow tube made of wood or other suitable material in the form of a cigar. The interior of the tube A is provided with a lining, B, of non-porous metal or other suitable material, said lining being firmly secured in the tube by means of a non-conducting cement or packing. (Shown at a.) This cement lining a not only secures the tube A and lining B firmly together, but will prevent the heat generated by smoking froinmaking the exterior of the tube too hot to handle. In one end of the tube A is inserted a hollow plug, 0, made to represent the burnt end of a cigar or cigar-ashes, and inside of this plug is a perforated partition or diaphragm, b. In the other end of the tube A is screwed or otherwise detachably secured a mouth-piece, D, made of horn or other suitable material to represent a holder. This mouth-piece or holder being detachable, canbe easily taken 011' for cleaning.
The pipe thus constructed can be filled with tobacco and smoked, appearing as a cigar.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the tube A, non-porous lining B, non conducting packing a, hollow plug 0, with perforated partition I), and mouthpiece or holder D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of December, 1874.
J. C. COOK.
