IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOTVPE-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,874, dated June 1, 1875; application filed November 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANSEL N. KELLOGG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in the Method of Preparing Newspaper Stereotype or Electrotype Page-Plates for the Press, of which the following is a specification:
It has never been deemed entirely practicable to use pages of electrotyped or stereotyped matter where changes in it were necessary, on account of the time and expense involved in making new pages or in altering the plates, so that such changes are now almost universally made in the type itself. It has, indeed, been common to make up pages partly or wholly of stereotyped matter, and sometimes of stereotyped columns, but the plates in such cases are always of the size and shape given them in casting.
My invention is designed to obviate some of the objections and difliculties attending the making of changes in pages composed wholly of electrotyped or stereotyped material, and is more especially adapted to the printing of newspapers or other columned matter from such plates, where it is desired to change portions of the page for different editions without changing the whole form. Its nature will be fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is an end view of an electrotype page-plate as the same appears when cast entire without columns. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same after it has been severed accordin g to my improved method, and as it appears when locked in the chase and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 2.

The main feature of my improvement C011- sists in casting the plates with a groove upon the back immediately opposite the column interval, and extending from head to foot.
This results in a variety of ways, which will occur to any skillful mechanic; but it may be most readily accomplished by the insertion of a proper rule in the cover of the mold, which, when shut down, approaches the column-rule, and may be adjusted to render the intervening film of metal of any desired thickness. This feature of my invention facilitates the operation of severing the plate into columns by reducing the thickness ofthmetal upon the line of the cut.
I do not claim the whole page-plate, nor the separate column plates even of a whole form; but
I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The whole page-plate cast with a groove on the back opposite the interval between the columns, substantially as specified.
