Application led September The invention relates to liquid cooling devices of the internalor double tube type, and more particularly to the heads forming the elbow connections between the tubes.
Such coolerscomprise tiers-of horizontal double spaced tubes, the ends ofthe inner and outer tubes respectively being connected for the How of liquid successively through the tubes of the tier. The use of such coolers 1n the treatment of milk in dairy plants necessitates a construction permitting ready access to all surfaces in contact with the milk for cleaning and sterilization after use.

Referring to the drawings, thenumeral 1 vinidicates the base element 4of the head construction, which is provided with a pair of rearwardly extending annular anges 2 and 3, within which are secured a pair of outer tubes 4 and A5, the base 1 having openings 6 and 7 for communication from the tubes 4 and 5 with a chamber 8',formed bya for-v through which pass a pair of inner tubes. 14 and 15 having a slidable bearingin the openings.' The openings 12 and 13 are positioned' to support the inner tubesin spaced relation to the outer tubes 4 and 5.

Each of the rings 23 and 24 is constructed with an annular recess 25 formed in its inner surface (see Fig. 5)' from which one or more outlets 26 open outwardly'through the ring. In the case of any failure in the packing about the tubes caused thereby would be intercepted by the recesses 25 and escape through the outlets 26,'thuspreventing the intermixture of the liquid flowing in the tubes 4 and 5 with that in the tubes `14 and 15. The voutward escape of the leakage also gives visible warning of the fact that the packing is leaking, and enables'immediate correction.y i
The outer plate 16 is` also provided in its front face with a peripheral recess 27 adapt- 'I ed to -receive packing material and within which is supported a flange 28 formed on the inner ce of a cover cap 29, the cap 29 being sha'p d to provide a chamber 30 between it and-t e outer plate 16 for communication. betwee the inner tubes 14 and 15 extending thro gh the openings in the outer plate'16.

The liquid flowing through the upper tube 14, of the inner tubes illustrated in Fig. 3, passes through the chamber 30, formed by the cap, and into the lower of 'the 'inner'tubes lVith the parts of the head structure assembled as described, it will be seen that there is no possibility of intermixing the fluid ilovving in the outer tubes with that of the fluid flowing in the inner tubes. i' To disassemble the head structure for cleaning, releasing the thumb nut 36 and swinging away the lever 32 with its supported capl 29, permits the ready removal of the inner and outer plates 10 vand 16, after which the inner tubes may be Withdrawn, and all surfaces of. both tubes and head structure with which the fluid is in contact are f readily accessible for cleaning and sterilization.

In a device of the class described, a pair of plates havingcoppositely disposed openings vadapted to receive-a tube, recesses in theproximatefaces of said plates formed marginally about said openings and adapted to receive resilient'material, and a ring disposed in said recesses adapted to compress said resilient material upon said tube with the clamping together of said plates, said ring havino' a recess in its inner surface adapted to intercept liquid passing between saidtube and said resilient material, and having-an'outlet from said recess for the discharge of the interceptedliquid'therefrom.
