COLLAR BUTTON.
Application filed February This invention relates to collar buttons such as are used inthe neck-band of a shirt to secure the ends of the neck-band together and a collar to the neck-band.
5 One object of the invention is to provide a collar button having a base with its bot tom side concavely curved in all directions from its edges whereby said base may conform to. the contour of the neck of the wearer and a comfortable contact of the base with the neck is ensured.
Another object is to provide a button of the character described which has a base and a head connected by a substantially coaxial shank, the head and base being so shaped as to cooperate to prevent the button from rolling and from glancing or flying off obliquely when dropped upon the floor.
Further objects are to rovide a collar button having a 'basesubstantially rectangulaiyin plan but with its sides convexly curved and its corners rounded, said base having its bottom face spherically concave with the concavity merging directly into the 2 peripheral edges of thebase; to provide such collar button in which the base and the head are of similar rectangular shape with their sides substantially parallel so as to cooperate in preventing the button from glancing off and rolling when the button is dropped, and to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding and like parts are designated throughout the several views by the same reference characters,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collar button embodying the invention, portions of the base being broken away and shown in section;
l igure 2 is a top plan View of the collar button, and
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the collar button comprises a shank 1 having at one end a base 2 and at the opposite end a head 3, said base, shank and head being preferably coaXia-lly arranged. The base and the head are substantially rectangular in plan and the sides there 1, 1926. Serial No. 85,341.
of are convexly curved as at 4 and 5, respectively, and the corners are rounded as at 6 and 7, respectively. The corresponding sides of the head and base are substantially par allel. This construction prevents or restrains the collar button from rolling and glancing or flying oif obliquely when the collar button is dropped upon a floor or the like. Ac cordingly, the possibility of temporary loss of the collar button due to its flying or rolling into inaccessible places is practically obviated. At the same time, all sharp corners and edges are eliminated so that no discorn' fort to the wearer is possible.
The bottom face 20 of the base 2 is concave in all'directions from the edges of the base, and preferably the concavity is substantially spherical and merges directly into the edge. of the base. In other words, the bottom face 20 of the base is substantially the segment of a; hollow sphere, the length of the chord of which is determined by the distance between diagonally oppo-site corners of the base, the edges of the base being thus longitudinally concavely curved, as indicated at 8. This results in the collar button conforming to the neck of the wearer and providing a comfortable contact of the base with the neck irrespective of axial rotation of the collar button. In other words, the corners and sides of the collar button form eX-- actly the same contact with the neck of the wearer regardless of whether the sides of the base 2 are horizontal and vertical, respectively, or diagonal.
The collar button may be made of one piece of material as illustrated, or of several pieces in accordance with known constructions and methods of manufacture.
' -VVhile I haveshown the collar button as formed with a rectangular base and a rectangular head, it will be understood thatit is within the scope of the invention to make the base and head of other polygonal shapes with the sides of the base and head substantially parallel,
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A collar button comprising a shank having a polygonal base and a head at opposite ends, the bottom face of said base be Flt) mg in the form of a segment of a hollow sphere the length of the chord of which is substantially equal to the distance between diagonally opposite angles of said base.
2. A collar button comprising a shank having a base and a head atopposite ends, said base being substantially polygonal with its sides substantially convexly curved, the bottom face of sald base being in the form of a segment of a hollow sphere the length of the 1 chord of which is substantially equal to the distance between diagonally opposite angles of said base.
