The invention relates to anticreeping devices in which a rolling member interposed between the edge of the base-flange of the rail and a fiXed adj acent surface on the tieplate is engaged or cramped between'such edge and surface by the movemen-t'of the rail relatively to the tie-plate, and it relates more particularly to a structure in which the rolling member thus cramped is in the form of an elliptical roller.
The object of the invention is to provide means for positively but movably engaging the roller with the tie-plate and thus avoid-- of a rail supported upon and engaged with" the improved tie-plate and roller.

The rail is of stand ard type having a. head 5, vertical web 6 and base- flanges 7 and 8, supported on a tie-plate 9 and held in place thereon and to'the tie, not shown, by spikes 10 in any approved manner. I
On the upper face of the tie-plate, near one end, is a transverse abutment 11 extending parallel with the outer base-flange 7 serving to hold the rail 7 against outward lateral movement, and on the upper face of the tieplate, oppositely disposed to the abutment 11 and separated from the inner base-flange 8, is a ridge 12 having vertical teeth 13 constituting a rack extending parallel with the edge of the base-flange 8.
The rolling member 14 lies in the space between the rack 13'and edge of the basefiange 8, and is elliptical in plan with its periphery perpendicular to its base and is formed with vertical gear-teeth 16 adapted eliminated.

The minor diameter of the outer periphery of the toothedroller' 13 is the same, or preferably slightlygreater than the width of the space between the base-flange 8 and the roots of the teeth 13 of the rack, and the roller is inserted in such space by engaging its teeth with the rack and also frictionally with the edge of the base-flange 8; it is then driven by blows of a'hammer until its under face contacts with the upper face of the tie-plate.
Thus engaged the longitudinal movement of the rail causes the frictional bite or pinching action to increase as the angle of the major diameter of the ellipse widens rela tively to the rack 13 and edge 8, with the result that the movement of the rail is effectually checked when the roller has travelled a short distance.
By'the engagement of the teeth of the roller with the teeth of the rack the roller is compelled to malre the partial rotation required to effect the pinching action and the danger of slipping or sliding movements of the roller relatively to the ridge 12 is The engagement also insures that a reverse movement of the rail returns the roller first to the original position and then moves it positively into position to resist a further movement in such reverse direction.
The points of the teeth 16 of the roller and also the angles at the roots are prefera'bly rounded as shown to lessen the danger of fracture under the excessive strains to which the teeth are subjected. The teeth 13 of the rack are similarly shaped for the same reason.
The teeth on the rolling member and the corresponding teeth of the rack may be varied in proportions as may be found necessary or desirable in adapting the invention to various conditions of service. I claim 1. In an ant-icreep.ing device a tie-plate adapted to support a rail, an abutment on said plate adapted to be against the outerbase-fiange of said rail, a serrated ridge on said plate adjacent to and separated from the inner base-flange of said rail, and a toothed rolling member located in the space between said inner base-flangeand said ridge, in mesh with such serrations and adapted to engage frictionally with said inner base-flange and to increase such frictional gripping action by the movement of said rail longitudinally.
