Application filed August 21, 1926. Serial No.. 130,669.
My invention relates to illuminated signs and more particularly to a lamp box for use in connection therewith, tlieprincipal 0bject of the invention being to provide a boxy of that character which is simple and economical in construction, which may be easily and quickly assembled or disassembled, in which ready access may be had to contained light bulbs for renewals or repairs andy which is sightly in appearance.
In accomplishing this obect I have prorvided improved details of structure, the pre-r ferred forms of which are illustrated .in the accompanying drawings wherein:
F ig. 1 is a perspective view of an illuminated sign embodying my invention, illustrating a preferred method of hanging the sign.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged diametiical section of the sign. n y
Fig. 3 is a sectional view onthe line-3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of portions of the lamp box, the lens and associated elements, partsbei'ng in section. y
Referring more in detail to ythe drawings:
1 designates the sign here shown to ybe cir*r cular in contour and comprising an outer, annular` rim portion, preferably composed of the side members 2 and 3 of sheet metal,
each having an inturned rib 4 near its inner` n edge forming an outwardly facing V-groove 5, the innerA edge of the sheet being straightened at the inner edge of the groove to forni a flange 6 in alignment with' the body ofthe sheet. f
Located at intervals about theinner edge of the rim and extending between the rim sheets 2 and 3 adjacent the rib k4 are spacing lamp brackets 7, each having yedge flanges 8 adapted to lie along the faces of the sheets 2--3 and secured thereto bybolts 9., The
sheets 2-3 are spaced at their outer edges by a ring 10, also of sheet metal, having edge flanges 11 overlying the faces of the sheets y.2--3 and secured thereto by kscrews 12, the
sheets 2-3 and the ring 10 yforming a rim yabout the lamp box, the inner edge of which is spaced by the brackets 7 The remainder` of the box is' formed of the ribs `4 on the inner ends'of the sheets 2--3y and the lenses 11', the edges of which fit within they V-T f shaped grooves 5 with their inner surfaces,
lying flat against the inner walls of the ribs 4, the lenses being held to their seatsr by keeper rings 13, preferably secured to the adjacent seats. 2-3 by the same bolts '9 which' anchor the brackets 7 thereto.
The inner edges of the keeper rings 13 are bevelled to vlie flat against the outer sur :faces of the lenses to form an extended con tacting surface of the keeper .ring against do g the lenses, fthereby avoiding kbreakage of the lenses. f
Attached to the outer faces of theibrackets 7, to lie within the rim portion of the sign are lamp sockets 14 preferably multiple, for carrying clusters of lamp bulbs 15, having wires 16 leadingthrough the lamp box and the ring 10 to connection with a source of current.
The name of anr establishment or other f of which are yconstructed as described, may ybe easily andquickly assembled, that it is substantial, that the lensesfmay be easily and quickly placed on the box or removed therefrom .for replacement of the lamp or.
for repairs, and that the box when assembled is ofsightly andk attractive appearance.
Vhat I claim and desire to secureby Letters-Patentis y Ay sig-n comprising a rim portion formed vof spaced rings forming a lamp box and central openings and having outwardly facing grooves at their inner edges, brackets, secured to and extending between the inner yedges of said rings, a housing ring secured to the outer edges of said rings, 'closing the lamp box, concave-convex lenses having their edges seated in said outwardly facing grooves, keeper plates attached to the rimy rings and overlying the lenses,y and lamp4 sockets mounted on said bracketsand extending yinto said rim portion. f
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
