mnms AND INDEXING EQUIPMENT.
This invention relates'to filing-land index ing equipments of theclass in 'whichfthe indexing equipment exemplifying my invention; I p I H Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of one of the groups of sheetsanid the sheet-holder therefor; i- I Fig. 3 is an elevation of a singlegro'up of several foldable sheets with their sheetholder, the sheets being' shown as they ap- 513 pear when unfolded, and exposing to view the inner face of the innermost sheet of the p; i r I Fig. 4 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of one group of sheets and their sheetholder, taken on line4ll of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of one group of folded sheets with theirsheet-holder, the
leaves of the entire set being separated from one another for the sake of clearness.
and indexing equipment which is illustrated therein, I have selected for exemplification an equipment comprising a lurality of sheets arranged in overlapping groups. Each group may comprise four or more leaves, and preferably each pair of leaves is form-ed by folding the sheet.- Then folded sheets are employed, and when each group comprises two or more foldedsheets, the
latter are nested; that is to say, the fold of one sheet is introduced into the fold of another. This arrangement is well shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which I have illustrated four sheets, designated, respectively, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The. sheet 6 comprises two leaves 10 and 10. The sheet 7 comprises two leaves 11 and 11. The sheet 8 comprises two leaves 12 and 12-, and the sheett) comprises two leaves 13 and 13. i
One or more of the sheets ofeach group wherein Ihave shown a sheet-holder 14. T y In Preferably, the intermediate portion of the 1919. SerialNn. 310,691.
may be provided 1 with letters, numerals, words or other symbols to serve as an index, and in the present example, I haveprovided the outer sheet of each group with an identificationserving for that group. The several groups are arranged with their identification-bearing margins in overlapping relationship, as clearly shown 1n Fig. l, and
while the dimensions of the complete file are not substantiallyincreased by the use of a plurality of groups of leaves instead of the usual individual leaves, yet the capacityof the file is greatly increased. One important feature of this increased capacity isthe use of a single sheet-holder for all the leaves of one ,group, and whereas inthe present exf ample several folded, sheets compose one group, there is provided a single sheet-holder for all such sheets, as clearly shownin Fig. 5,
75 the present example, each sheet is provided with two perforations 15, best shown in Fig.
'3, adjacent the line of the fold and preferably substantially bisected by such line.
B0 sheet-holder is received withinthe fold of i the innermost sheet, and said sheet-holder extends through the perforations 15and has its terminal portions entirely outside of the folds of the sheets, as well shown inFig. 2. The terminal. portions are herein provided with cylindrical trunnions 16, which may be received in suitable hearings in an ap-- qpropriate mounting. Referring to the drawings, and to the filing In thepresent embodiment, I have shown no a mounting 17.v having inwardly facing flanges 18, presenting opposed channels to receive the trunnions 16, the lattencontacting with one another in a continuous series, as shown in Fig. 1, and being restrained against longitudinal displacement in the channelsby the provision of suitable upper and " lower stops 19 and 20. The trunnions maintain overlapping margins ofthe groups in properly-spacedrelationship, and sinceloo they are cylindrical, they permit, the sheets which compose a given group to be turned about the axis of such group, in orderto expose. either face thereof, and to render the "desired surfaces accessible for inspection and recording purposes. I V It is evident from the foregoing that a number of leaves may be interlocked with the sheet-holder, and will occupy practically the space of a single card. Where anextended record under a singlere'terence is required, the pages are thus multiplied. In this way, the capacity of the file is greatly inultiplied' i i thus described one embodiment of my invention, but without limiting myself thereto, What I claim and desireby Letters Patent to secure is:
1;,In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality I of sheets arrangediin a series of overlapping groups, series of sheet-holders, one for each group of sheets, and a mounting presenting bear,- ings in wliich said sheet-holder's are mountedto turn to present said sheets in an up standing ora depending position. r
r '2. In a device of the class described, the combination, of plurality of sheets arranged in a series of overlapping groups, a series of sheet-holders, one for each group of sheets, and, a mounting presenting opposed channels in which said sheet-holders are received and mounted to turnaboutparallel axes.
3. In a "device of the class described, the combination o'tja-pl'urality of sheets arranged in a series of overlapping groups, a
series otsl1eet'liolders, one for each group of sheets, and a mounting presenting opposed channels in Which said sheet-holders arereceived, said: sheet-holders being adapted to turn in said mounting about theirrespective axes. i I r 1 4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pluralityot sheets arranged in overlapping groups, each 7 group comprising a plurality of folded, nested "sheets each sheet havin a sin le told from end to end and being perforated adjacent the told, and a series of sheet-holders, one
for each group'ot sheets, each sheet-holder extending through the perforations. of "the sheets of its group and having a part received withinthe fold of the innermost sheetof such group and apart extending along the external surface of the outermost sheet beside said told, and a mounting for said sheet-holders.
'5. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a plurality 0t sheets arranged in a "series of overlapping groups, each group comprising a plurality of iolded,
nested sheets, a series ot sheetdiolders, one
for each group of sheets, and 'a mounting presenting bearings in which said sheetholdersareinounted, said sheet-holders being adapted to turn insaid mounting about parallel axes.
6.21m a device of the class described, the
combination of a plurality of sheets aranged in a series of overlapping groups, each 'roup comprising a plurality of folded,
nested sheets, a series of sheet-holders, one for each groupot sheets, each sheet-holder being received in -part ivithiii the fold of the innermost sheet ofits group, while another part of such sheet-holder extends along the external suriace'ot the outermost sheet entirely without the folds of said sheets, and a mountingpresenting opposed channels in which said sheet holders are received. 1
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of sheets arranged in a series of overlapping grou s, each group comprising a plurality of folded, nested sh'eets, a series of sheet-holders, one for each group of sheets, and a mounting presenting opposed channels in which said sheet-holders are received, said sheet-holders being adapted to turn in said mounting about parallel axes. I i
8. In a deviceoi the class described, the combination of a plurality or sheets arranged in a series of overlapping groups,
each group comprising a plurality oi folded, nested sheets, a series of sheet-holders, one for each group ofsheets, received in part within the fold of the inner sheet of such group, and thence along the exterior surface of the outermost sheet entirely with out the fold of such sheet and a mounting for said sheet-liolders.
In a device cf the class describechthe combination of a plurality of sheets ar- 'a mounting for said sheets, said mounting presenting guides in which said sheet holders are mounted to turn about parallel axes,
and by which said sheets are guidedin a direction transverse to their overlapping margins.
In testimony whereof, I ha i d my name to this specification.
