UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. THORNLEY, OI PAWTUCKET, RHODEISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO NA BRAGAN- SETT MACHINE COMPANY, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE! ISLAND.
PUMP.
Application filed June 3,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pumps and pertains more particularly to that type of apparatus using a multi-stage pump.
An important object of this invention 1S to provide an apparatus of the character described which is composed of a series of compression chambers and a multiple pump.
Another object of this invention is to pro- 10 vide an apparatus of the character described wherein a step by step increased compression from one chamber to another, is obtained.
Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of the character delo scribed in which the gear compartments of the various pumps are in direct communication with partially oil filled discharge wells whereby the wells serve as a sealing medium for the gears of the pump.
Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of the above described character having two or more sets of gears combined in tandem on a single shaft to form a multistage pump.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide an apparatus of the above described character having a pump made up of contiguous sections suitably bored and attached to a front plate by means of which the whole pump can be set into a condensing chamber housing, whereby the whole pump unit can be assembled and tested entirely apart from the general assembly of the machine.
A further object of this invent-ion is to which is simple in construction, durable'and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost.
In the drawings v Fig. 1 is afront elevation of a single cm pression unit, viz; a pump unit and compression chamber combined;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same with the cover of the compression chamber removed, and
Fig. 3 is an end view of a complete single unit of the described apparatus.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, A designates generally the compression chamber housing and B the pump which when combined as shown in the several figures, tend to make up a complete single unit of the apparatus which is composed of two or more of these complete units.
The compression unit A is formed to proprovide an apparatus of the type described 1926. Serial No. 113,416.
vide a base 1 and housing Qwhich is divided into a pump chamber 3 and compression chambers 4 and 5 by a horizontally disposed partition 6 and vertically disposed partition 7 cast integral with the housing.
Communication is had between the compartments 4L and 5 from the pump through open'ingsS and 9 in the horizontal partition 6. A pipe 10 is connected to an opening 11 in the compartment 4 through which fluid to be further compressed is fed to the pump unit 13. i The fluid is drawn into the pump chamber 3 and initially compressed by one unit 12 of the multi-stage pump unit B in chamber i from which it passes to the next compressing unit 13 of the pump Where it is further compressed and forced into the chamber 5 through the opening 9. An outlet 14 is provided in the upper Wall 15 of the housing of the next adjacent unit through which the compressed fluid passes to the chamber 4 of the said next compression unit similar to the one described.
As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the horizontal partition is provided with upwardly extending portions which form the top of the pump chamber 3 and which conform to the top of the pump unit B. The front of the housing has an opening through which the pump unit can be withdrawn and which is closed by a ring 16 that is secured to the pump unit and is bolted in place onto the housing. In order to remove the pump unit, it is there fore merely necessary to remove the bolts whereupon the pump can be slid out of its chamber bot-h easily and quickly.
Itwill be thus. seen that a refrigerating apparatus composed of a series of compression chambers is provided in which a multistage pump is used, whereby the fiuid is compressed and the compression stepped up from one unit to another until the desired result is obtained.
Further the pump unit B is formed of a series of rotors mounted in tandem upon a single shaft whereby the whole pump unit may be detached from the housing for testing the same independent of the remaining portion of the system.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is A refrigerating apparatus composed of a series of independent compression units each having a housing formed witha pump chamber, a horizontal partition in. each housing having an upwardly extending portion forming the top of the pump ehun'iher, the front side of each housing having an opening, :1
pump in each chamber slidzihle throughthe 1, were to the top of the housing and forming a pair of compressed fluid and 011 receiving c0111- partinents, a cover for (he housingengageehle with the upper edge oi the partition,
said horizontal partition having openings on opposite F'iiiQS of the vertical partition and comlnuni felting with the pump chamber, and ll'lQtlllS to iutercomiect the unite whereby to conduct the fluid from one unit to the next adjacent unit an as to ii'urrease the compression stegehyetege.
In testimony whereof l have signed my umne to this epecitieation.
