CIGARETTE-MAKING MACHINE.
Application filed October 22, 1925, Serial No. 64,225, and. in Germany November 4, 1924.
The devices used hitherto in cigarette making machines for depositing cigarettes in regular rows have various defects, which for instance in one constructional form result in the cigarettes being thrown from their original path of travel too quickly on to the band of the receiver, thus causing the ends to be damaged and preventing the cigarettes from being laid smoothly and regularly in rows. In another constructional form, in which the cigarettes are' laid smoothly on to the band, for instance by means of the vanes of a rotating drum, the cigarettes are not separated from one another by spaces, which, on their being pushed out of their original path on to the bandof the receiver, results in the cigarettes rubbing against one another and being thereby damaged. In addition thereto the removal of the cigarettes from the band of the receiver entails serious inconvenience, as between two rows of deposited cigarettes there is 'suflicient space. In a third constructional form the cigarettes are separated from one another by spaces, but the pushing of them on to the band of the receiver is effected by an inclined wall, which has the disadvantage that the original correct posltion of the cigarettes is. altered. Devices, in which the removal of the cigarettes on to the band of the receiver was to be efiected by air pressure have not been adopted in practice apparently owing to inconvenience.
The device according to the present invention, the object of which is to do away with all the difficulties referred to, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal longitudinal section, at right angles to the cigarette, Figure 2 a vertical longitudinal section parallel to the cigarette, Figure 3 a side view looking at the band and the roller located above the same, where the cigarettes are first received, and Figure 4 a plan view of the entire device. The new device and its manner of operation are described in the following: The finished cigarettes, 1, 1 which are ided by the gutter 2, pass on to the distri uting band 3 which runs round the pulley 5 and the roller 6, the pulley 5 receiving its rotary motion by means of tooth Wheels 29 and 30, the shaft 31 and a pair of bevel wheels 32 and 33 from the common shaft of the ma chine and imparting to the band 3 a quicker motion than the motion of the cigarettes along the gutter 2, whereby the cigarettes,
after reaching the band 3, commence to move more rapidly than was the case along the gutter 2; In order that the cigarettes shall receive one after another quickly and uniformly the'speed of travel of the band 3, a roller 4 is mounted above them, which is driven from the roller 6 by means of the belt 7 (Figures 3 and 4) and presses the cigarettes lightly against the distributing band 3. The shaft of the roller 4 is journalled in the lever 8 which rotates freely on the shaft 9 of the holder 10. A screw 11 is provided for regulating the pressure of the roller 4 on the cigarette. After a more rapid forward motion has been imparted to the cigarettes 1, 1 by the band 3 of the roller 4, the cigarettes will move on the band 3 with spaces between, as is shown in Figures 2 and 4, and in this position are pressed by the band 3 on to the bands 13 and 12 of the receiver for the finished cigarettes by means of the pusher 14 and are deposited in regular rows 1, 1 The pusher 14 travels along a path indicated in Figure 1 by dotted lines occupying successively the ositions 14, 14, 14 and 14 and thereby pus ing during its forward motion the cigarettes 1, l on to the bands 12 and 13, While during its return motion it rises and makes way for the following cigarettes. This motion is imparted to the pusher by means of the 'lever 15, to which it is fixed. The lever 15 has two motions imparted to it: a reciprocatin motion in a straight line, parallel to itself, along with the slide 20 by means of the roller 21 and the eccentric groove 22 of the eccentric 19 and a circular motion about its own axis 16 by means of the roller 17 which runs in the groove 18 of the same eccentric.
The pusher 14 displaces the cigarettes 1, 1 at the moment, at which one of the same arrives at the edge 23 and the other at the edge 24 of the plates 25 and 26, which lie below the band. The bands 12 and 13 are stretched over the pulley 27 and the roller 28, the pulley 27 receiving its rotary motion by means of the bevel Wheels 34 and 35 and the spur wheels 36 and 37 from the shaft 31.
The eccentric 19 is .fixed on the shaft 38 (Figures 1 and 4) which is rotated b means of the bevel wheels 39 and 40 from t e shaft 31. The eccentric 19 w ith all the parts which impart motion to it and the toothed wheelsa29 and 30 are housed in the casing 41 which is hermetically sealed by the cover 42. The lever 15 is in the casing'of the slide 20, which is hermetically sealed by the cover 48. In Figure l the covers 42 and 43 are removed, in order that the mechanism housed in the casings 41 and may be visible. The shaft 31 and all the parts, from which it receives its motion or towhich it transmits the same, are housed in the hermetically closed casing 44. Thus all the mechanisms which impart motions to the working parts of the device are in hermetically closed casings, where they operate under the most favourable conditions as regards lubrication and are completely protected from dirt and dust.
It will be clear from what has been said above that the cigarettes are deposited smoothly and without any damage in regular rows and also that when the cigarettes are provided with tips stuck on with an adhesive (cork and the like) the position of the ends having the tips will remain unaltered, when the cigarettes are deposited on the receivin bands 12 and 13.
What I c aim is 1. In a cigarette making machine means for depositing cigarettes in regular rows,
Lesaaea spaces between successive cigarettes, as set forth.
2. In a cigarette making machine means for depositing cigarettes *1n regular rows, comprising in combination a smooth distributing band a roller lying above the said distributing band for bringing each finished cigarette on to the surface of the said band and for increasing the speed of travel of the cigarette, for the purpose of forming spaces between successive cigarettes, a lever, a pusher on the said lever, and a double eccentric for imparting two motions to the said lever, namely a forward motion for pushing the cigarettes from the distributing band and a circular motion for raising the pusher on its return movement, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
IWAN ALEXANDROVIC SEMENOV.
