Description

Patented July 19K, 1927.
UNITED STATES Y THOMAS C. WHITEHEAD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PUMP.
Application led July 23, 1923. Serial No. 653,233.
The invention relates to pumps, being more particularly designed for use-in gas compressors, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation partly in section;
Figure 2 is an end elevation partly in section;
Figure 3 as a plan view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure l. y
In the construction of pumps for the purpose described, it is desirable tol have a noiseless valve action and also a construc- 1' tion where the inlet port will automatically V ing the compression pressure,l I have provided an' automatically seating valve, the construction being as follows A is the cylinder block, which, as shown, has a plurality of cylinders B therein. C is a common head for the cylinders. D is a plate clamped between the head C and the block A. E is a piston for each `of the cylinders, which has a passage F extending longitudinally therethrough and communicating with the lateral port- G, which, atthe completion of the suction stroke, registers with an inlet port H in the wall of the cylinder. I are ports in the plate D opposite .each cylinder. J are segmental recesses in the head opposite each port I, and K are resilient strips forming valves which are arranged in the recesses J and normally lie flat to seat upon the plate D surrounding the ports I.
With the construction as described, when each piston is upon its suction stroke, the valve strips K will seal the ports I and as the passage G is out of registration with the port I-I, there is no communication to the space within the cylinder above the piston. Therefore7 the movement ofv the piston will create a partial vacuum until the passage G registers with the port- I-I, whereupon the gas to be compressed will be. drawn in through said port and passage and will ll the cylinder. Upon the reverse stroke the strip K from its seat, bowing it upward into y the segmental recess J and permitting the compressed gas to pass outward. It will be noted, however, that the area exposed to pressure outside of the cylinder is greater than thearea of the port I, so that a considerably higher pressure will be attained within the cylinder than that outside thereof before the valve will open. f l
What I claim as my invention is;
' l. A pump including an open ended cylinder having a gas inlet port in a sidewall thereof, a head for the cylinder having a discharge passage therein, a plate between said head and cylinder having a port in communication with said passage constituting the sole outlet for gases from said cylinder, a normally seated noiseless valve in the head for controlling the iiowof gases through said -outlet port, and a piston'in the cylinder adapted to compress ythe gases admitted through said inlet port and thereby cause said valve to be unseated, said piston being so constructed and arranged as to uncover said inlet port upon its suction stroke and cover the said port upon its compression stroke, thereby providing a noiseless control for said inlet port. 2. A. pump including a cylinder having a gas inlet port in a side wall thereof, ahead having a discharge passage therein, a plate between said head and cylinder having port in vcommunication with said discharge passage constituting the sole outlet for gases from the cylinder, a substantially noiseless control for the inlet port comprising a piston in the cylinder consistingv of a solid body having a passage therethrough adapted to register with said inlet port at the completion of its suction stroke, and means for controlling the flow of gases through the outlet port comprising a noiseless valve in the headadapted to be seated automatically when the piston is on its suction Vstroke and adapted to be unseated automatically by the pressure of gases in the cylinder when the piston is on its compression stroke.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
THOMAS o. WHITEHEAD.
