Description

July 5, 1 927. E. HYMAN REVERSIBLB'FOLDED STAIR covanme Filed June 2, 1925 INVENTOR Elia. BY

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS HYMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
REVERSIBLE FOLDED, STAIR COVERING.
Application filed June 2, 1925. Serial No. 34,310.
This invention relates to improvements in stair covering pads, particularlytread pads as they are, for instance, described in my Patent No. 1,521,153, issued December. 30, 1924, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide pads of a suitable tread material, which is framed in a metal frame sufficient rigidity to hold the cushioning member properly extended over a step, while being sufficiently flexible to permit bending, so as to follow the contour of the steps.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stair pad having a stiffening member therein which may be of a waterproof material.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pad having a bottom or base of rubber, or the like.
F or further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more specifically defined.
In the accompanying drawing, material part of this disclosure: V
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a stair pad constructed according to my invention' Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevationof par-t of a staircase covered by pads madem ac cordance with my invention.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 1& of Figure 1.
The individual pads constituting my improved stair covering, comprise each a pad 10 within a metal frame 11. The pad is made of any well known carpet material and has an approximately, centrally located cushioned element 12, on a ground element 13, of suitable material, and a base element 14 which may be made of rubber, or the like flexible and waterproof material. I
Between the elements 13 and 14:, a stiffening member 15, of thin sheet metal, or other suitable, flexible material, 1s interposed, and
this member 15 is of frame shape, but of smaller size than frame 11, as shown on the drawing. When the pads are fastened to stairs, etc., the nails 22, or the like are driven through this reinforcing member, shown on the drawing, and not through the framell, as is customary. I have discovered that if the nails are driven, through the frame 11,
deformation will result, due to the accidental striking, and other causes, and therefore the contact between the frame 11, and the stairs proper is such that dirt can work its way under the pad. But driving the nails with in the frame, and through the reinforcement proper, abutting a reaction due to the action of the bottom of the said frame 11, which 'is, of course, adjacently below thefpart 1 1,
and this forms a tight and satisfactory joint. The pad has a line of blind stitches 16 to allow a ready fastening of the pad along this line, to fit against the stair-case 17 I The ends of elements 13 and lt, and mem-' ber 15, are held together by themetal frame 11 in the manner illustrated in F igure at.
It is to be understood that my stair covering may be used reversed and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, such changes may be made, as fall within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit of the invention.
15 :serves to press 14 against the stairs IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, ris as follows i I I In a'stair covering, a mat comprising a base element preferably of rubber, a ground element superimposed over said base element, a stifiening frame of dimensions less than the dimensions of said mat disposed between said ground and base elements, an
trally and extended transversely of said mat, said cushion being substantially the widthof the horizontal surface of a step, a metal frame of U-shaped cross section disposed around the edges of said mat, adapted to clamp the edge portions of said base, ground 7 and covering elementsv together, said mat be ing adapted to cover the upper riser, encircle the lower rises of said stai In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
