WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed August 21, 1923, Serial No. 658,645, and in qanada October 9, 1922.
p In lets of said pump being so placed as to turn the fabric over while rotating said fabric around in said tub 2nd. To provide a liquid receiving container preferably mounted at upper end of 15 said receiving tub for the purpose of holding rinsing or bluing liquid 3rd. To provide a container of perforated or foraminous material rotatably supported at the upper end of said tub and to be ro I tated at a medium speed for removing adherent liquids from thefabrics;
4th. To provide means so that liquid" may be removed from said upper container without being admitted to said receiving tub.
Generally sneaking, my invention is a single machine which will do a complete washing Without the use of other tubs or receptacles.
I attain these objects by the mechanism 30 illustrated in the-accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the entire machine. Fig. 2, a' top view of the machine. Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
' The tub or cleansing container 1 is provided with a conically shaped central compartment 2 and supporting legs The upper portion of the container is formed with 'a trough shaped member providing a rinsingor bluing compartment or container 4. Mounted within the compartment or container 4 is a drying container 5. i
. The drying container is'mounted for rotation on a shaft 6 which is operated by means of a motor 7 through pulleys 8, 9, and the belt 10. I The motor 7 is rotatably supported, through its base 11, on a pivot pin 12. which is mounted in a boss 13on a cover plate 14.
The pivot pin is held in position in the boss i The cover plate 14, which serves as a cover for the pump rotor 16 is provided with a packing nut 14;".
The wall of the conical compartment of r the container 1 is provided with openings 17 through which cleansing fluid is'forced into the container by the. pump so that the art1c1es being cleansed will be turned over during the cleansing operation. An outlet 18 for the cleansing fluid is also provided.
The rinsing compartment 4 .is provided with a separate outlet 19 which drains to the exterior of the apparatus.
The drying container 5 is provided with a boss 20 of annular form having a diametrical cross piece 5 and. a thrust Washer 21 by means of which it is mounted on the shaft 6 and is rotated thereby. The container 5 is formed with a plurality ofperforations 22 in the Walls thereof, whereby the fluid draining from the articles during the drying operation will flow into the compartment 4 and be carried ojf through the outlet 19 without passing into the container 1. The. operation of my improved washing machine will be apparent from the foregoiirg description and it istherefore only necessary to refer briefly to the steps of cleansing, rinsing and drying the articles thereby. One batch of articles and the cleansing fluid are placed in the container 1 and the motor started; and the pump rotor is thereby placed in operation, thecleansingfluid thus being forced through the openings in the conical compartment in such direction that the articles are turned over thereby as the container is rotated.
When the articles have been sufiiciently cleansed, they are taken out and placed in the perforated container 5, the compartment 4 having first been filled with the rinsing or bluing fluid; a second batch of articles may then be placed in the container 1. Operation of the pump will now cleanse the articles in the container 1 and rinse or blue those in the container 5. When the rinsing fluid is drained off, further rotation of the drying container will dry the articles, as
will be apparent.
preferred form of my invention, it is ob-- vious that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as, 1
for example, the rinsing or bluing com artment might be made independent 0 the cleansing compartment, and I desire to be limited, themfore, only within the scope of .the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isi- 1. In a washing machine, the combination of a washing container having a perforated compartment extending upwardly from the .hottom thereof, said container having an anaunt liquid container compartment in the upper portion thereof aperforated container positioned in said annular compartment, independent outlets for said container tion with a, main container having a central vertically extending compartment, said compartment having openings throu h the walls thereof, ashaft extending throng said comeaaeoo pertinent, an annular compartment in the upper portion of said main container, means mounted on said shaft for forcing liquid through certain of said openings in said ccntral compartment and around the articles carried in said main container and a perforated container in the annular compartment, said perforated container bein mounted for rotation on the upper end 0 said shaft.
3. In a washing machine, comprising a tub provided with a compartment adapted to hold a cleansing li uid in its lower part,
and a compartment a opted-to hold rinsing or hlning liquid in its'upper pant, means for draining liquid from the upper part of the tub, a container having a foraminous wall so ported within said upper part and adapte' to receive clothing or fabric to be dried, means for rotating the container for drying the fabric, and means operated by said last named means for cleansing the fabric or clothing while in said lower part.
of the container.
