'-LThe invention relates to water heaters ot that type in which the heating Haine is arranged beneath the end of a cylindrical tank, the products of combustion from said llame assing upward around the walls of the tank ietween thesaine and a surrounding jacket. With such construction it is desirable to hold the hot gases in close contact with the walls o the tank so as to secure the greatest ef.
ficiency in transferring lthe heat. On the other hand, it is equally important toavoid interference with combustion and proper draft for carrying away the gaseous products. Therefore, in designing the construction the must neither be too large nor too small, but is so proportioned as to carry away the gases while maintaining contact with the surface to be heated. There is, however, a ditliculty arisin frointhe fact that as the gases cool, they ecrease in volume. section of the flue at the base of the tank is suicient for the passa e of the hot gases, this same section wilill e larger than is needed for the cooler gases at a higlieipoint, which both diminishes the velocity and interferes with close contact or scrubbing action.
It is one of the features of the present invention to avoid this defect by as construction in which the cross section ot the ue is diminishedv for the cooler gases. lt is a furtherrobject to provide a construction o 'acket which at the base will withstand the eat and is of suicient strength to support the weight of the tank, whileabove the base it is of lighter weight and provides smaller llue'space. Still further the invention consistsv in various features of construction as hereinafter set forth.

A is the water holding tank, B is a cylindrical casing surrounding the ba'se portion of the tank, being preferably formed of cast iron and being provided with a plurality of inwardly projecting lugs C for marginally supporting the tank. The casing B is suitably supported as by a base ring D, which in turn is mounted upon legs E. F is an upper j acket section, which is preferably formed of sheet metal and issupported on a ledge G flue space between. the jacket and the tankl Thus if the cross formed at the upper end of the ycasing' l. As shown in Figure l, the ledge G is foi-'ined by a bead.project1ng inwardly from the member B, but in the modified constructionv latter is greater than the flue area between the tank and the upper jacket section. This will compensate for contraction in volume of the gases due to cooling will maintain more nearly uniform velocity.
ln the manufacture ot water tanks one head is usually convex andis secured to the cylindrical body by an inwardly extending annular ange riveted thereto. lt is not, however, possible to make both ends this way as it would be'practically impossible to rivet the head last secured if the flange thereot were to extend inward. Therefore, it is the practice to arrange one head inward and the other head outward. With my construction of. heater the convex or vinwardly flanged head J is placed at the base, While the out- Wardly flanged head K is arranged at the top. However, this latter head, instead of being concave throughout its extent, is reversel dished so as to be convex, thereby resulting in greater strength to withstand internal pressure and also diminishing the gas pocket, which would otherwise be vformed at the top of the tank.
To produce the highest eiciency the jacket is surrounded with heat insulating-material, which in turn is enclosed within an outer jacket. To retain the two jackets and the tank in concentric relation, there is provided at the top a metal cap L, 'which is (lll Sfl
stepped or offset at M to form a bearing for the jacket F and is provided with a pelripheral'lange N for engaging the outer jacket O. The cap L centrally engages the nipple P which forms the outlet for the hot water, and this also holds said cap in concentric relation to the tank.
