SAFETY MECHANISM FOR DISPENSING APPARATUS.

My invention relates to safety mechanism for visible gasolene dispensing apparatus.
The particular object of my invention is to render the pump incapable of delivering gasolene into the overhead visible container when the mechanism for draining back the contents of said container has been set in drain-back position.
When set in drain-back position a'passage is opened to admit air from the visible container to the suction side of the pump which is used to fill'said container, rendering the pump incapable of drawing gasolene from the storage tank below. When the drainback mechanism is so set it may be locked rendering the pump incapable of elevating gasolene until the drain-back valve is unlocked and closed.
When the drain-back valve mechanism is unlocked and the drain-back valve closed, the passage to the suction side of the pump is also closed. Then the apparatus is ready for use to both pump and serve gasolene.
In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration:
Figure 1 is a visible gasolene dispensing apparatus and tank, part of the tank being broken away to show the foot valve; the pump casing, visible container and drain back valve mechanism and connections being shown in vertical axial section;
Fig. 2, a detail, is a similar view of the drain-back valve and connections, the overflow .pipe being broken away to show the drain-back pipe and the fill-pipe removed;

Referring now to the drawings, T is a gasolene storage tank buried under the sidewalk S, with foot valve 1', connected to the outlet suctionpipe t and overflow pipe 2?. Pipes 6 and I? extend upwardly through the sidewalk into the casing 0, within which as a precaution against fire. This drain is the pump P and surmounting which is the container G of glass or other transparent material, with cap g.
At the top of the suction pipe t is placed any suit-ablepump P, the one shown being a rotary pump of the usual type, adapted to force the gasolene through the fill-pipe t into the visible container G. The overflow pipe t terminates at such a height within the visible container G as to drainback to the tank T at each-filling any gasolene in the container G in excess of the full numher of units of measure, as five or ten gallons, that the container is adapted to dispense when substantially full. The pipes 7 t and t have no valves but are open at all times. A Valve E is adapted to open and close an outlet from the container G, through which the gasolene flows to the automobile tanks or other receptacles of 7 purchasers.
A drain D leading from the floor of the container G to the overflow pipe t is also connected by a pipe d with the suction side of the pump P. A valve al is adapted to close the drain so that no liquid will flow from the container G through the drain either to the pipe t or the pipe d. A look (Z is adapted to lock the valved when it is adjusted to drain-back position which is open position.
Whenever the dispensing apparatus is shut downas at night the gasolene in the container G is drained back to the tank T ing is accomplished by opening the valve al and looking it in open position. The gasolene in the container G then flows through the drain D -to the overflow pipe and thence to the storage tank T.
If when so shut down some meddlesome person attempts to operate the pump P, it will not pump liquid because the gasolene in cl will be drained out by the operation of the pump and then air will pass into the suction side of the ump, immediately rendering it useless tor pumping untll the valve al is closed.
Many changes may be made in my improvement from that herein shown and described without departing from tlie spirit of my invention, and I claim as covered hereby any apparatus readable upon the claims ultimately allowed hereon.

1. In combination with a dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below; a dispensin containerabove, a fill pipe connectin said tank and said container, a foot va ve for said fill pipe, a suction pump in said fill ipe line, means independent of said fill plpe line for draining the contents of said container back to said tank; and a v'alvcd'fiuid by-pass between said means and the suction side of said pump.
2. In combination with a dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below, a dispensin container above, a fill pipe connecting said tank and said container, a foot valve for said fill pipe, a suction pump in said fill ipe line, means independent of said fill plpe line for draining the contents of said container back to said tank; a valved fluid by-pass between said means and the suction side of said pump, and means for opening and closin said draining means and said valved flui by-pass.
3. In combination with a' dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below, a disensing container above, a fill pipe connectng said tank and said container, :1 foot valve for said fill pipe, a suction pump in said fill ipe line,. means inde endent of said fill pipe line for draining t e contents of said container back to said-tank; a valved fluidby-pass between said means and the suction side of said pump and unitary means for opening and closing said draining means and said valved fluid by-pass.

In combination with a dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below, a d15- pensing container above, a fill pipe connectmg said tank and .said container, a foot va v p e for said fill pipe a suction ump 1n 7 said fill P ipe line, means inde endent of said fill pipe line for draining t e contents meant? of said container back to said tank; a valved fluid by-pass between said means and the suction side of said pump, unitary means for simultaneously either opening or closin, both said draining means and said va ved fluid by-pass, and "a lock to secure said opening and closing means when same is in open position.
5. In combination with a gasoline dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below, a dispensing container above; afill pipe connecting said tank and said container, a foot valve for said fillv pipe, asuction pump in said fill pipe line, an overflow pipe connecting said container withsaid tank, a valve in said overflow pipe,=a valved fluid by-pass from said valve 1n. said. overflow pipe to the suction'side of-sa-id pump, said valve in said by-pass adapted to. close fluid communication in said by-passi and said overflow pipe simultaneously, and to open fluid communication in said lay-pass and said overflow pipe simultaneously.
6. In combination with -a gasolene' dispensing apparatus having a storage tank below, a dispensing container above, a fill pipe connecting said tank and said contains er, a foot valve for said fill pipe, a suction pump in said fill pipe line, anoverflow pipe connecting said container with said tank, a valve in said overflow pipe, a valved fluid by-pass from said valve in said overflow pipe to the suction side of said pump, said va ve insaid by-passada ted to close fluid communication in said y-pass' and said overflow pipe simultaneously, and to open" fluid communication in said by-pass and said overflow pipe simultaneously and means for locking said valve in {open position.
