Description
6. F. STAPLES WASHING MACHINE July 5 1927.
Filed April 21, 1924 iNVENT OR ATTORNEY Patented July 5, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. STAPLES, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed April 21, 1924. serial no. 707,914.
? improvements are first, to provide a fabricreceiving tub or container in which fabric may be washed; second, to provide a perforated container in which fabric may be placed after washing and rotated for removmg adherent water therefrom by centrifugal force, third, to provide a secondary container surrounding the bottom and sidewalls of said perforated container for gather the liquids thrown from said perforate container, fourth, to provide an outlet for drainin from said secondary casingl 'quids to sai liquids from or admittin secondary ca in container, fth, to provide a hose of s cient length so that the tub ma be filled or emptied without the use of ot er receptacles.
Generally speaking my invention may be defined as consisting of a centrifugal pump within a tub, a erforated container superimposing said tuisaid ump and said container being so designed and proportioned as to rotate at the same speed-as a standard electric motor, thus eliminating the use of gears, belts or other speed reductions.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the machine; Figure 2, a plan view of the machine as it appears after the removal of the cover.
Similar numerals refer to similarparts throughout the severalviews.
.The washing tub 1, preferabl made of metal and having a cylindrical si e wall and fiat bottom is supported on legs 6 by pins 19 at a convenient height. The rinsing tub 2 is sup rted over washing tub 1 by pump cover and completely surrounds the bottom and side walls of'perforated container 3. Pump rotor 18 is fastened to vertical shaft 8 by pin 22. Pump cover 7 is held-in the central portion of t e washing tub by screws 17 and is constituted by a cylindrical wall 24 thus forming a compartment which is enlarged at its lower portion 25 to enclose indepen ent of said wash the pump rotor 18. The c lindrical wall of the pump cover and the e rcgled lower por- I tion are provided with liqui assages 26,
27 respectlvely, for the passage of the clean- Eg fluid during the operation of the ma- Perforated container 3 is rotated by frictio n washers 14 and and washer 14 being driven by vertical shaft 8 and pin 23.
Rins' tub drain 13'is threaded at its outer en t receive a standard hose and coupllng 11 said hose and coupling 11 to be used for filling or emptying rinsin Standard hose and couplin 12 is %or fillmg'or emptying washing tu 1. Pacldng nut 9 is referably made large enough to permit 0 tightemng by hand. Washing tub cover 4 is removed by handles 5.
I am aware that prior to m invention laufndry machines have been ma c with cen- 111! u described m invention in detail and pointed out at lengt the construction and arrangements which my experiments now indicate to be most desirable, I do not limit myself tub 2.
l driers and pum s, and while I have to such details or arrangements exce t as aving thus described my invention, what 7 I claim 1s:
1,, In a washing machine, a washing tub having an open top, a rinsing tub of smaller diameter than said washing tub disposed above and extending into said washing tub, a perforated basket disposed within said rinsing tub, a vertical, rotatably mounted shaft in said washing tub, said basket being mounted on said shaft.
2. In a washing machine, a washing tub having an open top, a compartment having a surrounding wall provided with o enings therethrough and extending upward y from the bottom of said washing tub, a rinsing tub'extending into the open top of the washing tub and resting upon said compartment a pum mounted on said shaft and locate in sai compartment, a perforated basket within said rinsing tub and mounted on the upper end of the shaft, and means for rotatlng said shaft.
3. In a washing machine, a Washing tub having an open top, a compartment having a surrounding Wall provided with openings therethrough and extending upwardl from the bottom of the washing tub, a rinsing tub supported Within the open top of the wash:
ing tub, a shaft extending through said compartment, a pump mounted on said shaft and located in said compartment, a perforated basket Within said rinsing tub and mounted on the upper end of said shaft, and means for rotating said shaft.
