h ppl ication filed September 10, 1925. Serial No. 55,473.
-'lhis invention relates, generally, to improveinents in burial coffins or caskets; and, the present invention has reference, more partcularly, to provide a coiiih or casket, the structure of which is such that a water or moisture-proof, as well as an air-proofj burial-receptacle is provided, so that if decided, it will be unnecessary to use an outside casing'or box, or a' vault for the same.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object theproduction of a novel and'simply constructed burial coflin or casket which may be sealed up so as to provide thesame entirely'weatlier and. air-proof, so
that the coilin or casketwhile it has thegeneral appearance of the coffin or casket now in general use, still isperfectly Water and moisture-proof, so'that it will not rot when placed in the ground,-.and'atthe same time is also prefec'tly air-proof, so that the corpse within the coi'tinor casket will be preserved in its buried condition for a longtime.
The invention has for a further object .to construct a coflin or casket both the body and lid of which comprise an outer shell of marble, either in the form of slabs, or a plastic composition, an inner shell or lining of fiber, beaver board, or the like, with an intermediate layer of water or moisture proof material, as tar, wax, asbestos and shellac, to which may be added charcoal,
which prevents rotting, and asbestos} which preventsfreezmg and cracklng, the lid being sealed to the body of the coifinor casket before it is placedin the ground.
Other objects of this invention not'at this time more particularly enumerated, will be more fully understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
\Vith the various objects in View, the said invention consists in the novel coflin or casket hereinafter set orth; and the said invention consists, furthermore, in certain Figure l is a side elevation of a coffin" or same; and Figure 3 is a plan View of the body of the conin or casket, the lid being represented removed therefrom.
a Figure 4 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of said body and Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional representation or fragmentary portions of the body an'dlid of the cotiin or casket, said views being-made on an enlarged scale.
Similar characters of reference are em iii) ployed in the said above described views,
to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the-said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates acomplete coiiin or casket showing'one embodiment of the'principles of the present invention, the
body of which comprises an: outer shell 21 of any suitable th ckness,sa1d shell being made ofmarbleinthe' form' of slabs, or
other suitably connected" pieces of marble, or a mixture of marble-dust and other bind ing ingredients, all adapted to receive a high polish, to provide'a body having an outer ornate appearance. Thereference-character ,3 indicates an inner shell or lining, preferably of fiber or beaver-board, suitably fitted within said body to provide a space, which is filled with a water or moisture-proof materialit, consisting of a suitable mixture of tar, wax, and shellac, to which may be added asbestos and powdered charcoal, the latter ingredients being used to prevent cracking and freezing, and the charcoal being especially useful to prevent rotting. In a similar manner, the lid of the coffin or casket also consists of an outer shell 5, made of marble in the form of a slab, or other suitably con-.
nected piece of marble, or a mixture of marble-dust and other binding ingredients.
The lid is also provided with an inner shell or lining 6 of fiber or beaver-board, ar-
ranged within said outer shell 5 to provide a space which is filled with a water or moisture-proof material '4' of the nature hereinbefore described.
To provide an air-tight connection be tween the body and lid of the coffin or casket, grooves or channels 8 and 9 may be provided, for the reception therein of a packing 10 of rubber, or other analogous, material which is compressed within said channels or grooves, to provide an air-tight joint when the lid is fastened down upon the body by means of the usual fastening means. as will be understood from an inspection of Fig ures 2 and5 of the drawings.
Of course, the'coiiin or casket thus produced may have suitably secured thereto any of the usual carrying means, as 11, and
ill
the interior of the body and lid may he euitw ably lined with any suitable material 12, such as silk, or the like.
From the foregoing dcscription of the present invention it will be seen that I have produced a highly ornate collin or casket, which is perfectly "vater or nioistare-pronl, as well as air-proof, the materials and ingredients preventing cracking and trcczing.
Furthermore, owing to the nature ol? the outer shells of the body and lid oi the coliin or casket, the surfaces thereof can be highlv polished and variously finished, so as to provide a highly attractive burial device; and if desired, owing to the novel constria-tiion, and the vater or nloist'ure-prtniil elements ol the collin or casket, the same ran be placed in the ground. without: the usual outer box now employed.
Of course 1 tllll .l'ull a\ 'are, that: my present invention is capable of some changes in the general arrangements and combinations of the various parts, without departing t'roin the scope of the present: invention as set; forth in the toreg roing specification and as clelined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact ar angeinents and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification,
nor do I confine myself to theexact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accoinl'ianying d awings.
I claim 1. A collin or casket: ctnnprisingr a bodi and a lid each consisting (it an outer shell ol mineral substance and an inner shell of librous material. arranged to provide a space between them and a moisture-prooli material filling said s '1ace ('ol'isistillgg' o! a mixture ol tar, wan", asbestos and ahellar.
:3. it collin or casket comprising a llOtLV and a lid, each consisting]; otl' an outer shell of mineral substance and an inner ahell ol? fibrous material arra injed to provide a space between them, and a moisturcprool n1ale rial filling said spare consisting ot a inixtiurc ol tar, Wax, asbestos-5;, ehrlla: and poivdered charcoal.
23. A collin or casket coinpri iing a body and a lid, each conaisting of an outer ehell of marble and an inner shell ol tibrous mate-- rial arranged to provitlta spare between them, and a inoistare-proof material fillingsaid space consietiinr ole tar wax, asbestos, shellac, and powdered charcoal.
In tic tiiuon n that I claim the invention set forth above it have hereunto art my hand this 8th day of li'lepteinber. 1925.
