PRESSING DEVICE FOR FOLDING MACHINES. I

This invention relates to a pressingdevice for folding machines and although capable of general use, is designed with particular reference to a folding machine of the construction shown in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1399264, issued to me on December 6, 192-1.
In the use of folding machines for folding the edges of leather and other sheet material, great difficulty has heretofore been experionced in folding the conveXly curved edges of the work and so far as I'am informed no machine has heretofore been produced which will accomplish generally satisfactory results in this respect. In all machines adapted for this kind of work, it is essential that means he provided for turning the edge to'be folded up or over into a position where it may be engaged by the pressing means to be pressed into a cemented relation with the-reverse side of the body portion of the material without crumpling or wrinkling the turned over fold. The folding of straight edges'isa comparatively simple problem and no great difficulty has been met with in this respect. The same is true in folding those edges which are concave since those edges must be slit which greatly facilitates the folding opera tion. In folding convexly curved edges of the work, however, the turning up of the edge to be folded causes a fullness to appear in that edge which assumes a wavy appearance which on curves of small radii develops into pleats. In consequence of this fullness, there is a natural tendency for the turned up or overedge to resume its orginal position and straighten out just assoon as it leaves the turning or folding means, and when the pressing means operates the edge is either straightened out or crushed and wrinkled which requires that portion to be refolded by hand.
Further complications are introduced be-- cause the convexly curved edge after it leaves the turning member travels in a direction different from that taken by a straight edge. The latter travels along the normal line of feed of the machine but the convexly curved edge proceeds along a line inclined away from the line of feed and sometimes when the curve is of small radius along a line approximately perpendicular to it. i
As a result of the foregoing conditions,tl1e various pressing means heretofore provided in the different machines in use have proved entirely inadequate to produce perfect fold ing on thoseedges of the work which are curved convexly; p y The primary object of my invention is the provision of pressing means, applicable to folding machines in general, which is equally well adapted for folding all kinds of work whether, the edges be straight or curved either convexly or ooncavely.

The lower end of the member 306 is in the form of a rectangular finger with a pressing surface 312 which is in alignment with the pressing surface 302 on the body portion 300 when the said member is retracted into the slot 310 formed in the face ofthe said body portion. In the operation of my invention, the pressing device normally in a raised position with the member 306 held in an ad vanced position as shown in Fight by the spring 814, the pressing surface of. the member-306 being more nearly vertical than the pressing surface 302 of'the main body por tion of the device.
