This invention relates to an electric switch, the general object of the invention being to provide means for breaking the circuit automatically when the position of the switch is changed, the invention being mainly designed for use on tractors which have a. tendency to rear up when the strain on the draw bar reaches a certain degree.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, 1l lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompany ng drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a tractor showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the device itself.
Figure 3 is a rear view of Figure 2.
Figure 4: is a section on line 4l of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view showing the position of the arm when the circuit is broken.
In these views 1 indicates ablock which is attached to the arms 2 of an angle bracket 3, b 1 the bolts 4. The lower bolt passes through a slot 5 in the lower arm ot the bracket so that the block is adjustably connected with the bracket. The bracket is adapted to be bolted to a part of the tractor, as shown at 6 in Figure 1. An arm 7 is pivoted to the front face of the block by the pin 8 and this pin is connected with the conductor 9 which forms part of the ignition circuit of the motor of the tractor. A terminal 10 is also carried by the block and this terminal has connected therewith the conductor 9 which also forms part of the ignition circuit so that when the arm 7 is in contact with the terminal 10, the circuit will be completed through the arm but when the arm is out of engagement with the terminal 10, the circuit will be broken and thus the motor will cease to function. A weight 11 is connected with the lower end of the arm so that if the tractor should rear up and Serial No. 668,415.
tilt the block the arm will swing over, under the action of gravity, and thus break the circuitso that the motor will come to rest and the front part of the tractor will drop back upon the ground. A stop 12 is arranged on the block for limiting the movement of the weighted arm.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the device will automatically break the circuit when the front part of the tractor rises from off the ground, thus stopping the motor and preventing the tractor from falling backwards upon the driver or operator. The block can be adjusted to a vertical position on the tractor by means of its adjustable connection with the bracket.
lVhile the device is mainly designed for tractors, it will of course be understood that it can be used in other situations.
When the device is used in connection with a magneto, the stop 12 has the conductor 9 connected therewith instead of with the terminal 10 so that when the arm swings over and makes contact with said stop 12 the ignition circuit will be grounded and thus the motor will be stopped.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is Aswitch of the class described, comprising a brackethaving a pair of outwardly extending arms thereon, one arm being slotted, a block pivotally connected with one arm and a bolt and nut for connecting the other arm to the block, the bolt passing through the slot in said arm, a weighted arm pivoted to the block, means for electrically connecting said arm with an ignition circuit, acontact connected with the said circuit and carried by the block and against which the arm will rest as long as the block is in a vertical position and a stop on the block for limiting the movement of the arm when the block is moved to a tilted position.
