IMPROVEMENT IN CANISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,075, dated May 11, 1875; application filed March 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAs A. ILsLEY, of the city and State of New York, have invented an lmprovement in Canisters, of which the followin g is a specification:
Canisters of sheet metal haveheretofore been made for holding a variety of articles, such as tea, coffee, spices, sal soda, caustic potash, mustard, 850. With some of these articles it is important that the canister be kept as tightly closed as possible, especially in damp Weather,
or under certain conditions of the atmosphere,
of temperature, moisture, or pressure.
My invention consists in a canister constructed, as hereinafter described, with a barometer and thermometer in the front thereof, by means of which the atmospheric condition is easily determined, and hence the attendants can exercise precaution in opening and closing the canister quickly when the atmospheric condition is unfavorable to the contents. At the same time the said barometer and thermometer are ornamental in appearance, and serve to increase the attractiveness of the can to the observer.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, of this improved canister.
The top a, bottom 12, and sides 0 of the canister are of any desired size and shape. The front 61 receives the thermometer f and the barometer. 1 construct this barometer in an attractive form, such as has heretofore been known, in which two figures, g and h, are upon horizontal arms t, suspended by a cord, 70, of catgut, or other suitable material that relaxes or tightens according to the atmospheric condition of moisture or dryness, and in consequence of the twist of the cord the arms i turn around sufficiently to cause one figure or the other to advance out of a recess, and thus indicate the atmospheric condition. In order to be able to introduce this barometer I make an ornamental projection, l, in the front of the canister, into which the openings are made for the said figures g h, and this allows the adjusting-knob 0 of the barometer to be outside the front d of the canister, so that it may be easily reached when the figures are first placed in position, or as they may have to be adjusted in consequence of the change in the condition of the cord.
I claim as my invention The canister made with the projecting portion 1 at the front thereof, provided with a thermometer, and having openings for the barometrical figures g h, and provided with theadjustingknob 0 of thebarometer within, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of March, 1875.
S. A. ILSLEY.
