PAPER BAG AND TWINE HOLDER.

Application filed April 21, 1926. Serial No. 103,554.

The invention provides an appliance de signed chiefly for use in a grocery store, but which is adapted for general use where articles are dispensed in pokes which are made secure with cord.

The invention provides a rack for the bags and a holder for the twine or cord, both being kept separate and within convenient reach, yet supported in a manner so as to be out of the way.

While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood thatiu adapting the means to meet specific needs and requiren'ients, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof. 1

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.

The appliance comprises a bar 1 which usually consists of a strip of wood of any determinate dimensions according to the size and capacity of the device. The bar 1 receives the twine or cord holder and the rack for the paper bags, the same being attached thereto in any preferred way. When the bar 1 is of some considerable length it is preferred to mount a cord holder at each end thereof and since both holders are constructcd substantially alike a detailed description of one will suffice for a clear understanding of each.

The cord holder comprises a standard 2 having an arm 3 projected horizontally from its upper end and a support 4 to receive the cord or twine 5, which is preferably in the formof a bobbin. The parts 2, 3 and 4 constitute elements of a single strip of metal bent into the form substantially as shown. The cord support 4 consists of an upwardly disposed loop which is adapted to enter the whereby the device is connected to a ceiling or other convenient overhead support. A cord lifter 8 is pivoted intermediate its ends to the lug 6 and the end adjacent the outer end of the arm 3 is formed with an eye 9 for the passage of the loose end of the cord 5 thercthrough. The cord lifter 8 consists of a lever and the end opposite that provided with the eye 9 is of superior weight to normally hold the cord receiving end elevated.

After the bobbin of cord or twine has been placed upon the support 4 an end portion is passed through openings formed in the standard 2 and arm 3, thence through the opening 9 of the cord lifter 8 and is left dangling so as to be conveniently reached when required. When the end of the cord is grasped and pulled upon to unwind a length from the bobbin, the end of the lever 8 is lowered and after the required length of cord has been obtained and severed, the loose end is lifted so as to be out of the way by the automatic tilting of the lever 8 which turns to elevate the end provided with the opening 9. In this manner the loose end of the cord is in position to be conveniently grasped yet is held out of the way. The rack for the paper bags comprises a plurality of loops 10 and in'jzhe preferable construction these loops are connected and form parts of a metal strap which has portions bent in the same direction to form the loops 10. The parts 11 of the strap intermediate the loops 10 are apertured to receive fastenings 12 such as screws, whereby the rack is attached to the bottom side of the bar 1. One member of each of the loops 10 is formed with an opening 13 and the companion member has a lateral slot 14 extend ing through an edge thereof and projected downwardly at its inner end. A pin 15 is provided to extend across the space formed between the lower ends of adjacent loops 10 and the point of the pin 15 passes through the opening 13 of one loop and its head 16 engages the slot 14 of the adjacent loop. The opening 13 is some distance above the slot 14 and, in consequence, the pin 15 is inclined to the horizontal. A bunch of paper bags, indicated by the dotted lines 17, is

suspended from the pin 15 which is thrust through the bags adjacent the open end and when the parts are placed in position, the

bags assume an approximate echelon arrangement, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1, so that they may be conveniently obtained when required, each bag being stripped from a pin which tears through the upper open end as the bag is pulled from the rack. It is to be understood that a pin 15 isprovided for each two adjacent loops 10, it being observed that the pin, when in position extends across the space formed between the lower ends of adjacent loops.
