This invention relates to leveling devices and pertains particularly tosuch an instrument desi ned to be used in connection with the setting up of corner bead strips. 5 The invention has for its primary object the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of a level structure having means for supporting a corner beadstrip so that the strip may be placed in true position at a wall corner and so held until nailed into place.
Asis well known, in the construction of buildings in which plastered walls aroused, the projecting corners of the walls are usually protected by the applicationthereto of a substantially V-shaped metal strip, the corner formed along the-joining edges ofthe sides thereof being extended to provide head portion. This strip after being placed in position over a corner, has the plaster of the wall placed thereover leavingonly the outer edge of thebead portion along the angle thereof exposed to receive any knocks which would otherwise be received by the plaster if the strip was not used. The placing and securing into position of these strips in a perfectly vertical position is rather difficult unless some truing up instrument is used in connection therewith.
The device embodying this invention is designed to hold the strips in true position whiletheyare being secured in place.
A further and final object of theinvention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of a corner bead strip holding and leveling device of strong and durable construction, easy to use and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows the device embodying this invention, in perspective view and as in use.
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the device and through the corner of the wall structure to which it is applied.
Figure 3 shows the device in side elevation, and i 1 Figure shows a front elevation of the same. Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsthroughout the several views, there is-indicated generallyby the numeral 1 the device embodying this in vention. A corner wall studding is inclicated at 2 and to the outer faces of this studdingthere are secured the lath members 3 which are applied preparatory to plastering. As shown in Figure 2 these lath members-3 do not overlap at the outer corner of the studding 2 thus giving a square effect to the corner.
The instrument 1 is substantially T-shaped in cross section as shown inFigure 2 and constitutes a relatively long head. body 4 and bymeans of which the plate can be shifted to change the relation betweenthe spirit level and the head 4. As is shown the spirit level is here secured transversely of the head. A socket or recess 10 is formed in the head behind the spirit level, as shown.
The free front edge of the body portion 5 is provided throughout with a substantially ll-shaped channel 11, at the inner part or apex of which there is formed the relalively narrow groove 12.- The body is pro-, vided, near its front edge, with the transversely extending apertures 13 which open through the walls of the channel 11 and adapted to be extended through each of these apertures or passages, is a pin member 14, secured, by means of the chain or flexible element 15, to the side of the body 5, by means of the eye 16.
Secured to one side of the head 5 over the recess 17 formed through the head, is the plate 18 through which a central aperture is formed over which central aperture the thereupon the retaining pins i i are extend ed. through the apertures and the nail holes in thestrip, thus securing the strip to the instrument. The strip 20is then placed in position along the edge ofthe wall over the ends of the laths 3 as is shown, the square corner efi'ect resulting from not overlapping the ends ofthe laths 3 allowing space for the pins i l to extend across the corner of the wall as shown. When the strip is level, as indicated by the spirit levels 7 and 19, the upper and lower ends are nailed in position and thereafter the pins 145 may bewithdrawn and the instrument removed so that the strip can be further securely nailed to the corner of the wall structure.
From the foregoing description it will he readilyseen that the device embodying this invention will enable a builder to easily and quickly place into position the corner head stripand at the same time get the same properly aligned so that the corner of the finished wall will be aerfectly vertical.
Having thus descrih we claim is 2 y 1. In a device of the character described, an elongated body member having a substantially lsha-p ed channel extending throughout one edge thereof to receive a cornerbead strip, said body further having a groove formed therein at the crotch of said channel to receive aportion of said strip, and means carried by thebodyj for holding the strip in ed our invention what strip, and securing membcrs'adapted to be extended through apertures in the walls and transversely oi, said channel,"through nail apertures in said head, to hold the head in 1 posit-ion while being set to afwallcorner.

In a device of the character described, an elongatedmember saiastantially Tlllillltll in cross section having the single lree edge of the body thereof provided with a substantially V-shaped channel having a groove at the crotch thereof, to. receive a corres-aiondr ingly shaped corner head strip, securing plns adapted to hold said head m said channel, and a leveling device carried upon the head of the member for setting the head in proper position.
