MIXING APPARATUS.
Application led August 20, 1925, Serial No. 51,470, and in-ermany August 29, 1924.
Tli'is invention relates to improvements in in coptiiuer 12. Owing to the sucking apparatus for mixing liquids, including aet1o1 1. of the machine, which may bepasemulsions and suspensions with each other, which apparatus resemble rotary pumps 'or turbines in which u wheel provided with vaues or blades is rotated by an outer driving mechanism. The improvement bears relation to the especial manner of supplying the rotary wheel -with the materials to be mixed.
An apparatus of the type described and embodying my invention is shown iu the accompanying drawing, in which v Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-section along the driving shaft of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the rotor, and
3 is a diagrammatic side view on a reduced scale of a modification. Y
1 is the casing of the mixer, 2 is the rotor provided with two rows of vanes or blades 3 and 4. The outer vanes or blades ma)1 be offset with respect to the inner vanes or blades as shown in Fig. 2. 2 is the rotating shaft, 5 illustrates the pipe` for supplying the material yto be treated.
In the interior of the mixing apparatus the outer diameters of the supply pipe and the inner row of blades or vanes (or, when more than two rows are employed, the innermost row) are almost equal. The inner diameter of the discharge pipe 6 is preferably chosen to diier from that of the supply p 'Plhe front side of the latter is closed by a cover 7 and its wall is perforated by slots 8, very close t0 which the blades or vanes 3 rotate. The total cross-section of the said slots preferably amounts to at least the cross-section ofthe supply pipe, but-it may be increased or diminished by means of a slotted ring 9, according to the nature of the material under treatment. 10 is a p' provided with a valve1`1 for connecting the interior of casing 1 with a suction pump (not shown). The dimensionsof the casing are reduced as much as possible so thatonly a little more than the space required for the rotation ofthewheel is left.
The apparatus is operated in the followmanner. After the casing has been one single 4passage through the mixing .sistel. by external pressure, or owing to exterual pressure alone, the mixture is lifted and supplied to the mixer through pipe 5. The material may be returned to container 1 2 through pipe 6 and the treatment contlnued. until the desired intimate union of the mixture is attained; or the .discharge plpe may be connected with another vessel or vessels 13, as shown in Fig. 3, and the mixture discharged. into these vessels after machine. IVhen a plurality of liquids is to be supplied to the mixer at the same time, the supply pipe may be connected with a. corrponding number vof supply pipes and contamers 12.a and 12b for instance (Fig. 3).
The material t0 be mixed is .projected from the slots 8 at the end of pipe 5in the form of radial jets which are immediately cut ottl by the blades or'vanes of the rotor.
The advantages of my improved apparatus as compared with the known appliances of similar kind are above all attributable to` the fact that the eiliciency as to quantity and Y intimate union of the mlxture is multiplied. F urthermorev the economy is increased owing to the fact that according to my invention relatively small machines are capable of conveying and mixing large quantities of material to be treated. By propor tionating the cross-sections of the supply pipe and the delivery pipe I may adjustthe conveying action with respect to the mixing action thus paying attention to the occa- Y owing to the relatively wide slots in the supply pipe.
I claim 1. Mixing apparatus of the turbine or centrifugal pump type, comprising a casing,
filled with liquid, the rotor is set revolving a paddle-wheel in the said casing rotated by a suitable motor. The material to be anexternal driving mechanism, a supply treated, for ,instance a liquid and a powder pipe having an inner diameter ap roximatto be suspended therein, is coarsely mixed 'ing the inner diameter of the pa dle-wheel and extending into the interior cylindric opening of the said paddlewheel, the end of the said supply pipe being provided with a' large number of slots in the proximity of the puddles of the said wheel, and a. pipe extending from the delivery side of the'said paddle-wheel. Y
2. Mixing apparatus rof the turbine or centrifugal pump type, comprising a casing, a puddlewheel in the said casing rotated by an external driving lmechanism, a supply pipe having an inner diameter approximat-- ing the inner diameter of the paddle-wheel and extending into the interior 'cylindric opening of the said paddle-wheel, the end of 15 the said supply pipe being provided with a large number of slots in the proximity Aof the paddles of the said wheel, and a pipe extending from the delivery side of the said paddle-wheel and having a, cross-section 20 smaller than the `cross-section of the supply pipe.
.[n testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HANS PBILL\VITZ.
