UNITED STATES GEORGE W. MEGNIN, OF ALLENDALE, NEW :TEBSEY.
ACCELERATOR CUSHION.
Application filed July 23,
This invention relates to cushion devices for accelerators of lnternal combustion engines used on automobiles and other places and has for an object to provide a construction which may be readily adapted to any.
accelerator rod or accelerator connection associated with a carburetor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cushion device for accelerator rods wherein means are presented which will cause a more even action in opening and closing the valve of a carburetor.
A further object, more specifically, is to provide in an accelerator rod a cushion wherein the power in both drums is communicated through resilient members.
In the accompanying drawing a Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in outline of art of an automobile with a cushion embod ying the invention shown applied to the accelerator rod.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the cushion shown in Fi ure 1, the same being shown associated wit parts of the accelerator rod.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Figure 2 on line 33.
Referrin to the accompanying drawing by numera s, 1 indicates an automobile provided with a carburetor 2 of any desired or usual construction having an arm 3 operating the usual butterfly valve. A bifurcated fitting 4 is connected with the end of arm 3 i so that when this fitting is'moved back and forth the valve will be opened and closed. Thefitting 4 is connected throu h a cushion 5 with the accelerator rod 6. n fact, the fitting '4 really forms ordinarily part of the rod 6 and the cushion 5 which embodies the invention has been inserted into the rod so that in efiect it forms part of the rod when in use. Rod 6 is connected with the usual foot pedal 7 through a bell crank lever 8. A spring 9 continually acts to hold the valve of the carburetor substantially closed.
When it is desired to accelerate the engine, pedal 7 is depressed in the usual manner and power is transmitted therefrom to the valve of the carburetor for opening the same to a greater or less extent according to the depression of the pedal 7. Where rod 6 is solid throughout and the'cushion 5 is eliminated, the valve of the carburetor is valve to open more easily and in a cushioned 1926. Serial mi. 124,540.
manner, the structure 5 is provided which is shown indetail in Figures 2 and 3. As indicated in these figures, the cushion 5 is formed with a casing 10 having a thickened end 11 provided with a bore 12 through which the rod '6' extends. Rod 6 at one end is provided with threads 13 so that the fittmg may be screwed thereon and the lock nut 14 used for locking the parts together. The casing 10 at the opposite end to the thickened portion 11 is provided with internal threads so as to be screwed onto the threaded section 15 of the block 16. Said block- 16 is provided with a bore for receivmg the end of rod 6, which rod is clamped therein by a set screw 17, though some other fastening means can be provided without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the casing '10 are arranged springs 18 and 19 which preferably are continually under slight com ression though they could be relaxe As s own in the drawing, these springs are, under slight" compression and bear against the respective ends 20 and 21 and also against the abutment 22 which is preferably integral with the enlargement 23 of rod 6' though it could be made separate andrigidly secured thereto. The abutment 22 is provided with one or more passageways or apertures 24 whereby oil orother lubri-- cant as well as air in casing 10 can *pass from one side :of the abutment 22 to the other side as the" device-functions. When the pedal 7 is pressed down to an ap reciable extent, rod 6 will-press against block casing 10 so that the spring 18 will be brought under greater compression and will with, though not with the same suddenness that would ordinarily occur when pedal 7 100 I is depressed. This will cause a smoother opening of the valve in carbureter 2 and, consequently, cause the engine to pick up in a much better way.- As pedal 7 is gradu ally released or if it is suddenly released, 105 spring 9- will move the parts backto their" normal position, namely, the position shown in Fi re 2. It will be noted that the back and orth movement of rod 6' and parts connected therewith is continually cushioned 11c 16 and Figure 2 through theientire movement of the.
butterfly valve and the same if returned in like manner. When pedal 7-is depressed sharply and jerkily, as in goingover rough roads, coil spring 18 will be compressed in degree according to amount of movement of pedal 7, in other words, under this type of action of pedal-7, springs 18 or 19 will absorb the shock of this uneven movement accordin to which way the pedal 7 is moving.
f pedal 7 'was sharply'depressed and held at that point, spring 18 would compress some and when pedal 7 came to rest, spring 1 18 would recoverits original position, therebycontinuing the opening of butterfly valve until'parts reach position -as' in Figure 2, giving the, smooth action desired. The purpose of enlargement 23 on both sides of abutment 22 is that if a sudden or absolutely sharp opening wasrequired, as if pedal 7 was suddenly pushed all the way down, enlargement 23 would strike block 16 and force the carburetor open at once if the springs did not act qu ick enough for this emergency. Enlargement 23 strikes the end 11 when the sprin'g9 draws pedal 7 back when the foot is't'aken' off, thus relieving any strain on sprin' 19 ;also compelling a firm' and tight closingpf the butterfly valve. Springs 18 or 19, according to the direction of movement of pedal 7-, absorb the shock of pedal 7 and someof the movement and in recovering itself," as itlmust and will, continues the movement imparted to pedal 7 until the parts com e'to 'rest as in Figure 2, thereby giving'a; softI smooth operation.
What I claim is:
1. An accelerator cushion including a casing having an openin at one end, a rod receiving block removably connected to the other end, a sliding abutment arranged in the casing formed with an aperture extending therethrough means extending from said abutment through said openin so as to connect said'abutment with an adjacent object, and a spring on each side of said abutment for resiliently holding the abutment centered, the aperture in the abutment permitting air and lubricant to pass from one side of the abutment to the other as the abutment is moved.
2. A combined accelerator rod and cushion for automobiles comprising a rod divided into two parts, each part having means for connection to an object, one of said means being adapted to connect the rod with an accelerating pedal and the other of said means acting to connect the device with the accelerator valve of a carburetor, and a cushion structure into which the abutting ends of said parts extend, said cushion structure comprisin a casing having a passageway at one end through which one part of said rod extends, an apertured abutment on said last mentioned part arranged in said casing, a pair of springs arranged in said casing, one s ring being arranged on one side of said a utment and the other spring arranged on the opposite side of said abutment, a block removably connected to said casing at the end opposite said passage-way, and means for connecting the second part of said rod to said block.
