BECEPTACLE'.
Application filed November 2a, 1922. Serial No. 602,677.
This invention relates to receptacles or containers. More particularly, it-isdirected to a portable receptacle adapted to serve as a hat bag for ladies hats or like articles. I I
One Object of the invention is to provide a portable receptacle of the character de- -means may be detachableso as pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the combinations of features of construction, elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim. I
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hat bag embodying this invention shown with the flap open so as to disclose the interior of the bag;
Fig. 2 is an end cross-sectional view of the bag shown in Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bag with the flap partially open; and
Fig. 1 isa vertical cross-section thereof cut along line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the hat bag embodying this invention there shown is seen to comprise a flat cylindrical body consisting of two circular base members 10,11 and an annular wall member 12. The base members and the wall members are preferably cut to shape in separate panels and are then joined together in any suitable manner. Thus in the form shown in the drawing, the edge of the base member 10 is inturned as at 10 and'the contiguous edge 12 of the wall member 12 similarly inturned and then the base 10 and wall secured to each other along the inturned edges by means such cord 15.
as the'line of stitches 13. If desired, a'stiif- 'ening cord'14 maybe employed to reinforce the bag at the point of junction between the base and wall. The latter may comprise a core 15 enclosed in a covering 16 made of the same material as that of the bag. The edges of this covering 16 preferably extend inwardly and are joined to the intu'rned edges. 10 and 12 by the same line of'stitches 13. Similarly, the base 11 is secured tothe opposite edge of-the wallmember which is turned in as at 12 and stitched to the corre sponding inturned edge 11 of the base member by means of the stitches 17. 11 stiffenmg cord 18 may be employed at the point 'of-junction betweenfthebase 11 and the wall ,member and secured in the same member as already described with reference to the Besides reinforcing the bag as explamed, these stiffening cords 15' and 18 further serve to add ornamental appearance thereto.
s The wall member 12 is cut away for a portion of'the circumference thereof at the front of the bag so as to provide an opening 19 large enough to admit a hat or like article such as indicated at 20. In providing this opening the material of the wall is preferably cut away from a point adjacent one of the bases such as 11 to the mid-height of the wall, thus leaving a depending semi-wall portion 21. Secured to the base adjacent the ends of said opening 19 is a flap member 22 adapted to close said opening and of a width substantially equal to the height of the wall member, so that when the flap is closed it overlaps said portion 21 of the wall. or closing the flap, snap fasteners 23 are provided along the lower edge of the flap and along the sides thereof, these snap fasteners consisting in male members 24: secured to one of the elements to be fastened together as for example, the member 21, and corre sponding female members or sockets 25 secured to the other element, the flap 22f The material from which the bag is made is preferably cloth, fabric, canvas or the like flexible material, and if desired, such cloth may be rubberized so as to make the bag waterproof. Means is provided for reinforcing the body of the bag so that it may maintain its shape as shownin Figs. 2 and 3. To this end, a separate reinforcing member 26 is provided comprising a substantially rectangular band made of stiff yet pliable material, which is positioned on the inside of the bag and curved so as to rest against the rear portion of the wall member extending between the ends of the opening 19. This member 26 is preferably detaehably secured to the walls of the bag as by means of snap fasteners 27, the co-operating parts 27, 27 of which are secured respectively adjacent the ends of the reinforcing band and ofthe opening 19 respectively. Thus, whenthe bags are shipped in quantity, the bands 26 are packed flat thus, permitting the bags to be flattened with their bases superimposed. In
this way considerable economy of space is effected, as will be readily understood. At the front of the bag where t] 1e same is open to receivethe article, it is not desirable to provide a continuous stiff reinforcing member since the flap 22-should remain flexible for facilitating the manipulation thereof. ,For this reason I provide the re-enforcement at the front of the bag by means of spaced rib members 28 made of strips of metal 29 or like stiff material secured in place in any suitable manner as by means of strips of material 30 covering said strips and stitched I to the interior of the wall. For facilitating the carrying of thebag, a handle member 31 is provided which maybe opened or closed by means of a snap fastener 32.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in whichthe several objects of this invention are achieved and which is claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent:
A receptacle of the character described comprising a pair of base members, a wall upstanding between said base members, said wall having a portion thereof cut away to provide an opening for the receptacle, said members and wall being formed of flexible, thin, sheet material to permit collapsing the receptacle when not in use, a continuous relatiae-ly stiff shape-retaining structure fitted to extend along the interior side of the uncut portion of said wall for retaining said. base 'members and wall in an effective-expanded position, avv closure 7 flap permanently attached to one of said base members, spaced ribs secured to said flap serving as a shape retainingreinforcement therefor, and means adjacent said iibsfor detachably securing the flap to the wall and the other of said base members. V .i
In testimony whereofl affix my signature. EDYVIN
