Extra -long stencil-cards, used in some addressing machines` have information typed on their baclr sides, below the usual small stencil-sheet. One of the features of the present invention is theprovision of a card-holding frame arranged with stops above its. bottom for use in stencil-card devices, .with whichinformation may be readilytyped below the stencil-sheet on the bach of a stencil-card.
According to the present invention, the card-holding frame iis-'arranged to be raised and lowered on a. track fast on end frames mounted on the carriageof a .typewriting machine, upon manipulation of a handle fast to a geared sectorat the right of the carriage. rlhe sector is arranged to' drive up or down, through 'an intermediate pinion and gears mounted 4on the platen-shafts, racks fast on said frame. This invention is illustrated as applied to an Underwood standard typewriting machine arranged for typing stencil-cards used in addressing'machines A stencil-card 10 has a body 11 of heavy paper or cardboard, in which is provided a window or opening 12` over which secured a. thin, tightlystretched stencil-sheet 18. Vertical columns 1a and 15fareV provided on tlie front and back, respectively, ofthe bodylg'll, in which may be typed data for identification and other purposes. The data is preferably typed upon the hack of the card below the opening 12, as illustrated in Figure 3. This data may he conveniently typed on the card in the device of the lind disclosed in the above noted applica 'n arranged with certain improvements of the present invention. y
The card 10 may be inserted in the top of a card-holding frame 16, between two upright side frame-members 17 provided with rear flanges 18 arranged to extend a short distance behind the righta-nd left sides ofthe card to within a close proximity of the ends of a platen 19. A' downwardiy-extending flexible guide-finger 2O may be fastened to the top and on the front of each side framemember 17. The upper ends of the fingers may be flared outwardly, and the upper ends of the flanges 18 may have inwardly-extending portions 18;L to permit easier insertion of the cards. The lower ends of the lingers 20 may have a convex curve, whereby the fingers may press downwardly on the top of the card 10 to hold it aga-inst the bottoni of the frame 16. A spring strip 21 provided with tabs 22, may be fastened on the front at the bottom of the fra-me 16, and arranged to press against the bottom of the card tor holding it in place. Y 'Y lllhen it is desired to cut stencils in the sheet 13, or type data on the front of the bony 11, thecard may be pushed all the way down in the frame 16 with the stencilsheet 13 below the main portion of Vthe body, as illustrated in Figure 1. The operator will then pull forward a handle 25, which is fastened to a .geared sec-tor, not shown, which meshes with a pinion, not shown, mounted on a platen-shaft 26. Gears, not shown, are'mounted on the platen-shaft, and mesh with rac-lis 27 fast on the side 'frames 17, and the latter are caused to move down* wardly alonga track consisting of rearwardly-inclined flanges 28 fast on side plates 29 upon forward movement ot the handle. The side plates are mounted on a typewriter-carriage 30. The top portion of the body 11 is thns'brought tangent to the platen 19 at its printing point, which, as indicated by type 30a, is below a horizontal plane through the center of the platen-shaft. As isfully'diselosed in the above-noted application, when the frame 16 is lowered, a flange 31, fast on its lower edge, engages a. tooth 32 of a plate 33, fast on a shaft 34, and, revolving the plate clockwise, moves upwardly aV link 35, which causes a ribbonvibrating mechanism, not shown, to be operatively connected with `a universal bar 36, which is moved by engagement with the usualA heel of type-bars, noty shown'.
