Description

F. M. WNKEAD HEADLIGHT Filed Oct. 28, l92' Patented May 10, 1927.
reread PATENT series FOWLER I. KINKI IAD, 015 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. v
' HEADLIGHT.
Application filed October 28, 1925. Serial No. 65,432.
An object of this invention is' theprovision of a light deflector for the headlamps of automobiles of a construction whereby the same may be easily and quickly attached to the headlight and readily removed there-' from, and the application of which will defiect the rays of light from the headlamp in a downward and outward direction so that liability of accidents which frequently occur by blinding rays of light in the eyes of an approaching vehicle will beeffectively overcome.
With the above broadly stated objects in view and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in the novel construction, combination and operative associationof parts'a satisfactory embodiment of which is illustrated by the drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improven'ient.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of FigureQ. 1
Figure 4 is a face view of the head lamp.
Figure 5 is a similar View or the improvement.
The headlamp 1 may be considered of the usual construction, except that its sides are gradually rounded upwardly from its lower center to its top. Its top is arched. as at The rear portion of the substantially parabolic headlamp is provided with a socket for the usual lamp bulb 3, and the said headlamp has its outer ends. at determined points,
provided with slets 4. 4
The improved light deflector, broadly indicated by the numeral 5, has its inner portion shaped to 'correspondvwith that of the outer face of the lamp body 1, the same, however, being formed onkits inner face with a continuous flange 6 that is designed to overlap the outer edges of the lamp body 1. The rounded lower side 7 of the member 5 is provided with T-shapcd lugs 8 to be received in 'the slots 1, and the arched top 9 of said attachment 5 has centrally screwed therethrough a binding element 10 designed for contacting engagement with the round top 2 of the lamp for holding the attach ment on the lamp. The attachment has inner spaced flanges between which there is arranged the lens 11. Preferably the outer flange 12 is integrally formed with the member 5, while the inner flange 13, is removab'ly secured in the said member. Themmber 5, from its arched top is rounded downwardly and outwardly, as at 14, to provide a hood in the nature of a glare shield. The hood has side walls 15 and the lower ed e of the outer portion of the hood preferably extends a slight but suitable distance below the said 1 side walls. The side walls are rounded inwardly from their juncture with the top and sides of the member 5 to conform to the shape of the lamp body 1. y
The improvement may be easily, uickly and securely attached to the lamp bod the bulb 3 to bedefiected downwardly and outwardly from the lamp so that danger of such rays blinding the eyes of an approachin driver will be effectively prevented.
aving described the invention, I claim 2- In a head lamp, a body having its sides gradually rounded upwardly from its lower center to its top and having its top arched, a light deflector having its inner portion shaped to correspond with that of: the outer face of the body, a continuous flange thereon designed to overlap the outer edges of the body. .T-shaped lugs formed on the rounded lower side of the deflector, said body having T-shapcd slots for receiving therein said lugs. said reflector having an y the hood 14 will cause the raysot' light from archedtop rounded outwardly and down- V FOWLER M.
