THE GRAPH IC C0.PHOT0 FLIDLQQ 8 41 PARK PUGLNY- mum ITED TATES WILLIAM H. PALMER, OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANISMS FOR MOLDING THE SOLES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming-part of Letters Patent No. 32.764, dated May 4, 1875 application filed February 1 1875.
To all whom tt may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. PALMER, of Dover, in the county of Strafl'ord and State of New Hampshire, have inventeda new and Improved Mode of Molding the Soles 0t Boots and Shoes; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists of molding and compressing the toe end of the sole, so that it receives and embeds within itself the upper leather and the inner sole, and thereby protects the same from abrasion and wear.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The sole is first prepared in any of the usual ways. It is then molded in a mold having an adjustable attachment at the toe end of the mold, consisting ot'a metallic stamp. G, with an upright support J, moving vertically in a slit, H I, in the toe of the block, and adjusted by means of a screw to any amount of compression, according to the thickness of the stock.
Section G D in the drawing exhibits a longitudinal section of the mold, with the sole as compressed between its parts, the cross-section A B passing through the point of deepest compression at the toe end of the stamp. Section A B represents a cross-section through the same point, the amount of compression being shown between the dotted line E F and the upper curved line beneath.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mold-block provided with an adjustable stamp or device, G, for forming in the toe portion of the solo a depression to receive the'inner sole and upper, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A boot or shoe sole having a recess or depression at the toe formed by compression without removing any portion of the stock,
substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM H. PALMER.
