IMPROVEMENT IN CU LTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,700, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875.

To alt whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ELI SHUPE, of Middleville, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fallow-Gultivators; and I do hereby declare that1 the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures 0f reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 ot' the drawing is a representation of a side view of my eultivator, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.

This invention has relation to machines for preparing fallow-land; and the nature of my invention consists in applying the standards et the cultivator-teeth to a frame, to which the draft-pole and a controlling-handle are rigidly secured, which frame is pivoted at its front end to the front ends of two arms, which are supported by means of two wheels and adjusting devices, and which are connected together at their rear ends'by a foot-bar; also, in combining with ,the above an inclined slotted standard, through which the said handle passes, which standard receives through it a pin, applied beneath the said'handle, all as hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, A designates a rectangular frame, which is composed of longitudinal and transverse bars, and to which, centrally, the draft-pole B and a-handle, C, are rigidly secured. The front ends of the side vbars of frame A are pivoted, as will be hereinafter explained, to the front ends ot' two slotted and notched segments, D D, the tongues a a on the rear ends of which are rigidly secured to the front ends of two arms, E E. The arms E E are secured to a foot-bar, F, from which rises a slotted standard, G, through which latter the handle G extends. The standard Gr is perforated transversely at several points, for the purpose of receiving a pin, p, which is placed beneath the handle C, so as to press upward against this handle.

Should any one or more of the shovels b strike an obstruction, the frame A will spring up without throwing up the Wheels.

J J are two segments, which are constructed with tubes on their pivotal ends, and with recesses d in their free ends. The tubular portions of segments J are applied in the eyes of segments D, and held by screws e. It will be seen that metal bearings f are placed between the eyes of segments D and the wooden arms E. 0n the inner sides of the segments J spring-arms K are secured, which are received into recesses d, and which have studs 1l on them, adapted to enter one or other of the notches g in the rear edge ot' each segment l), and lock the segments together. The wheels N N, ou which the machine is mounted, are applied on short axles, which are passed through the segments J and through the slots in segments D, and receive nuts on their inner ends.

By means of the segments and the springarms the attendant, walking behind the machine, can raise or depress either side of the frame, and thus run the same level when one of the wheels is running in a furrow. By holding Iirmly on the handle C, and pressing with the foot on the beam F, the attendant can raise the shovels out of the ground, and avoid stumps and stones.

lNhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The frame A, having a draft-pole, B, and a handle, C, secured to it, in combination with the arms E and foot-bar F, pivotally connected to said frame, and with segments D J, springlatching arms K, and wheels N, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the handle G on frame A, the slotted standard G and its pin p on the foot-bar F, substantially as and for the purposes described.'
