THE GRAPHIC C0,PHOT0 LITH.39 8:41 PARK PLACE, N-YA UNITED STATES PATENT OEEre.
ROBERT W. MCGLELLAND, OF CERRO GORDO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BODY-LOOPS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,670, dated April '27, 1875; application filed October 30, 1874.
GAsE 1.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. MGGLEL- LAND, of Cerro Gordo, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Body-Loop for Carriage-Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, fol-min ga part of this specitication, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved body-loops applied to a earriage-sprin g, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of one of the loops detached.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
My invention relates to the loops or arms employed for connecting semi-elliptic springs to Wagon or carriage bodies, in what is known as platform-gearing, these arms having usually been made rigid.
My invention has for its object to so improve the construction of such loops or arms as to render them elastic without materially increasing their cost. To this end it consists of a body-loop composed of a single piece of spring-steel bent back upon itself, so as to form two leaves, and attached at one end to the wagon-body and at the other to the spring, as I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A represents a semi-elliptic spring of ordinary construction, and B B the,
loops connecting it to the Wagon-body WV. The loopsB are each composed of a single piece of spring-steel or other suitable metal folded back upon itself, so as to form two leaves, b b, Which are curved downward, the lower leaf b being attached to the spring A, as shown. The loop B is suitably secured to the Wagonbody at its bent or folded end, the remaining portion being free to rise and fall.
An elastic body-loopis thus produced, which greatly enhances the ease ofthe Wagon, Without impairing the strength of the springs or materially increasing their cost.
I claim as my invention- A l. The spring body-loop B, composed ofa single piece of steel bent or folded back on itself to form two leaves, b b', the folded portion being adapted for attachment to the Wagonbody, substantially as described.
2. The loops B B, having leaves b b', in combination With the spring A and Wagonbody lV, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
