IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES. I

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,602, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. BATSON, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing- Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.

My invention relates to that class of washing-machines known as wash-pounders and the nature of my invention consists in the construction of a wash-pounder, and in the devices for attaching the same to the tub, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical-section of my invention.

A represents the handle of my washpounder, on which is secured an inverted cup or cylinder, B, having a flaring mouth, (J, at its lower end. On the lower end of the handle A is secured a tube, at, having holes a near its upper end. Over this tube slides a cone, 1), to which is attached a disk, I), fitting within the cylinder B. This disk and cone are forced downward by means of a spiral spring, E, placed within the cylinder. The parts are held in the position shown in the drawing by the lower end of the tube a being made slightly flaring. As the pounder descends, the cone D comes first in contact with the clothes, and yields to the pressure, until the mouth 0 of the cylinder B comes down thereon, and the suction of air through the holes .90 draws the dirt out of the clothes. The upper end of the handle A is pivoted in a mortise in a lever, G, the inner end of which is corrugated on its under side, as shown, and inserted in a slotted standard, H, Whe e it is held against the upper end of the slot by a round bearing-block, I, actuated upon by a spring, J. This spring surrounds a pin, 07, projecting downward from the block I into a hole in the standard H. From the lower end of the standard H a pin or rod, h, projects downward through a base or support, K, attached to the outside of the wash-tub L, thus swiveling the standard to its support. By these means the pounder can be moved easily, so as to be worked on all the clothes in the tub without any trouble whatever.

Having thus, fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The combination, with a circular tub, L, of the support K, attached to the exterior thereof, the standard H swiveled thereto, and provided with the bearing-block I, which slides in the slotted standard H, spring J, and rod (1, and the corrugated lever Gr, connected to a pounder-stem, a, all substantially as set forth.
