.MEANS 0F SUIFOBTING CEILING FURRING.
Application filed November 2G, 1924. Serial No. 752,286.
This invention, generally stated, relates to building construction, especially concrete structures and has more especial relation to a ceiling structure and manner of attaching i'urring to its Supports.
As at present practiced, it is the accepted custom to wire fui-ring to the supporting structure in the construction ot a ceiling ot concrete, which not only consumes considerable time, is more or less expensive, and rcquires the services Vof skilled workmen. Further from an engineering view-point this procedure is not especially desirable.
The leading objectot the present invention is to overcome the above disadvantageous features and provide an efficient, practical and inexpensive system ot ceiling turring attachment to its supports which may be applied expeditiously and by unskilled workmen. A iturther object resides in the provision of a clip oi. simple and inexgen` sive construction, which may be conveniently used for etl'ecting the results sought by said leading object. Other and 'further objects not at this time appearing will be hereinafter more specihcally referred to.
The invention consists oi the novel construction hereinaftter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic 'features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which c Fig. l, is a View in side elevation illustrating one way ot' attaching ceiling turring to joist in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2, is an end view of Fig. l.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view oi one form ot clip employed.
Fig. 4:, is a view end of another manner of attaching ceiling furring to joist, and
Fig. 5, is a perspective view oi the type or clip shown in Fig. 4;.
For the purpose oit illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings two forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, Since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization ot the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring to the drawings in detail and with more especial relation to Figs. l to 3 the supporting structure, which in the present instance comprises bar-joist l, has positioned therebelow sectional, ceiling turring designated 2, and which is ot U-shaped cross-section. rdinarily such urring is secured to the bar-joist 4by means of wire. iiccording to the present invention I provide a plurality o't' clips, see Fig. 3, by the use of which I am enabled to attach the furring to the bar-joistmore expeditiously, cheaply and in a more thorough manner from an engineering view-point and by unskilled workmen. The clip is made from a single piece of wire and is bent to provide an inclined loop 3, vertical side pieces 4: and a pair ot horizontal supporting arms 5, terminating in upturned fingers 6. In use the loop 3 is positioned upon a lower horizontal rail 7 of the bar-joist l, so that the side pieces l straddle the said rail, the turring being arranged upon the supporting arms 5, with the lingers 6 paralleling one vertical wall oit the fui-ring and the side pieces 4 paralleling the opposite wall of the furring. An unskilled workman may thus readily and rapidly attach furring to bar-joist.. It is of course understood that the bar-joist is spaced in accordance with building regulations and that the turring is suspended at desired intervals. Metal lath, expanded metal or equivalent material of any desired type is then attached to the iurring in any desired manner, although in order to provide a good job from an engineering view-point I prefer to employ the form of furring shown in my co-pending application for patent Serial No. 736,245, tiled September 6, 192e and attach thereto metal lath of the type shown in my co-pending application for patent Serial No. 723,688, filed July 2, 1924. The object of having the loop 3 of my clip inclined is to have the center of gravity as nearly over the longitudinal axis of the furring as possible in order to prevent tilting of parts;
In Figs. 4t and 5, I have shown a slightly different form, of joist, commonly called steel-joist, and which is designated 7. The principal of applying the furring 8 is the same except that a slightly different form of clip is employed. A relatively U-shaped clip is used having a lower cross-bar 9 to support the furring and having vertical arins l() terminating in hook-like fingers l1 for engaging over the flanged part 12 of the steel-joist. The manner of applying .metal lath or the like may be the same as above recited.
It Will now be apparentthat I have devised a novel and useful construction `which embodies the features ol advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred en'ibodiniens thereof which have been `found in practice to gire satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of inodiication in various particulars without departing l'roin the spirit or scope oit' the invention or sacrificing any of its advan tages.
W hat I claim is:
A clip for securing urring to skeletonized joist formed lroin a single piece of material, as Wire, and bent to forni a horizontal, furring` supporting portion aud a pair of ver tical side pieces terminating in a loop projecting at an inclination and in a direction toward the toe of the clip, said loop being adapted to engage .over a bar of tbe :lower cord of skeletonized joist and an upturned end for each ol' said horizontal portions which upturned parts forni the toe oi the clip.
in testimony whereof, I have llereiuito signed my naine. l
GEO. I?. PAIVLING.
