METAL CUTTER.

rIhis invention relates to metal bar cutting machines or devices and more particularly to a novel and improved mechanism for cutting either lead or brass bars as used by typesetters.
One of the objects ot our invention is to provide a manually operable metal bar cutting device whereby extreme accuracy may be had `in cutting metal bars according to predetermined measurement and particularly small inserts for filling in the type as used in the printing art.
Another object oit' our invention is to provide a mechanism of the above character wherein either lead or brass bars may be cut with rapidity and withv eXtreme accuracy including a pair of adjustable gauges, movable relative to a cutter whereby both long and short pieces or strips of the metal may be easily out with rapidity and as desired.
A further object of our invention is to provide a metal bar cutting mechanism including a novel and improved micrometer gauge and a graduated, stationary measuring rule, on which the gauge may be adjusted so that the desired length oi metal bar or slug may be easily cut by the typesetter.
Another object of our invention is the provision of a metal bar cutting mechanism having a graduated rule and adjustable gauge slidable thereon, movable relative t0 a stationary cutter.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features oi" our f invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,

The plate 5 supports a central, longitudinally extending, narrow bar 8 a guide for the strip otmetal to be cut when placed upon the bed above referred to. rlhe bar 8 carries a graduated metal rule, the edge of which is serrated at 10 for cooperation with an adjustable stop or abutment designated in iis entirety by numeral 11. The lower portion 12 of the stop is provided with a recess so as to permit or the adjustment thereof across the face of the graduated metal rule 9, on which it is adapted to slide. vThe stopis also provided with a lever 13, pivoted at 14C, the lower end of said leverhaving a serrated face 15, which cooperates with the sei-rations 10 on the rule 9 so as to lock the stop in the desired position. A coil spring 16 is interposed between the upper end of the lever 13 and the top or head of the stop and normally maintains the serrated face of said lever in engagement with the rule. By depressing the lever 13 against the resistance of the spring 16, it will be seen that the stop may be thus moved to any desired position as clearly suggested by Figures et and 5 of the draw* ings. The stop 11 is also provided with two horizontally extending screws 17, 18,' which are adapted to act as abutments lor the ends ont the metal bar which is to be cut by the knife. The enlarged heads 18"L oi' the screws 17, 18, may be adjusted with respect to graduations 18'b on the stop 11 thereby accurately regulating to a very small degree, the width ot a piece of metal desired.
Referring in particular to Figure 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the top tace of the casing 7 is undercut to receive the front end of the bed or plate 5 and that the stationary blade or knife 18c is secured by screws 19 so that the said blade lies at right angles and flush with end and top surface of the bed or plate. The casting 7 also carries a short stub shaft 2O which pivotally supports the knife carrying arm 21, the front lend 22 of which is curved downwardly and constitutes a stop which engages an L-shaped extension 23 of the casting 7 ritt-ached to the inner face ot the arm 2l is the movable knil'e or blade 2e having a knife cutting edge 25 and recesses 2G, said recesses aiiording suiiicient clearance for the movable screws or stops or an adjustable gauge subsequently to be referred to.
The support 7 is toi-med with a vertical extension 28 to which the lever 29 is pivoted as :indicated by numeral 30, said lever being in turn connected by 'the .links 3l, 32 attached to ears 30 on the movable arm 2l. A spring within the movable arm 2l, normally retains said arm in its raised or elevated position as shown by Figure 3.
Vtet'erence being had now to lTigures 2 and 8 ot' the drawings, we have shown a second but shorter graduated, metal rule secured by suitable screws 35 at one end thereot, to the casting 7 and preferably in alignment with the rule 9 on the bed or plate 5. The last mentioned rule is provided with seri-ations 37 on the bottom tace thereof, which cooperate with the serrated end 37a of a lever 39, pivoted at 39 to an adjustable gauge, designated in its entirety by numeral e0. A spring Lil interposed between the opposite end of the lever 39 and the gauge, normally retains the said lever .in engagement with the serrated surface 37 oit the rule as clearly shown by Figure 6 of the drawings. Consequently, by depressing the lever 39 against the resistance ont the spring el, the gauge may be moved to any desired position with respect to the graduated face 42.
The top oit the gauge Lit) is provided with a wedge shaped slot therein 'for receiving a wedge plate 413, which carries a yoke 4%, the arms ot the yoke la being adapted to support a pair of adjusting screws l5 whereby very line adjustments may be made in that the heads of the screws constitute stops tor the ends ot the metal bars when the gauge l0 is moved in proximity to the cutting knives. On the other hand, the wedge-shaped plate is provided with a vertical aperture lor receiving the pin 47 of a disc 48, said pin movable in the slot i9 and rotatable by the knurled nut 50. Gonsequently, as the nut is rotated, the wedge may be moved to diilerent degrees on the graduated scale 40 which advances or retards the heads ot the adjustable screws l5 with respect to the cutter. A wedge locking member 52, having a locking lever 53 pivoted as at 54e, is adapted to engage the side olf the wedge plate to lock the same in its adjusted position, it being understood that the nut carries a pin movable over the graduated face 40 on the plate i3 whereby the adjust-ment may be set.
ln order to prevent the bending or the curvature ot the metal strip being cut beweasel yond the cutting blade, we have provided a rest or support in the nature ot an L- shaped pivoted member 56 mounted on a short shaft 57, extending outwardly 'from the casting 7, the longitudinally extending, liat bar .58 being adapted to rest on the yoke Llei and between the adjustable screws 45, it being noted that the bar 58 is in longitudinal alignment with the rule 9, being immediately above the opposite rule 35 as clearly shown by Figure ot the drawings. Under certain condition, the restor support 58 may be used as when longer pieces ot metal are to out, but when very `short pieces are ered, the rest may be thrown back on its pivot or the shaft 5T, in the manner shown bylpigure l et the drawings.
lillhile we have illustrated and described our invention with some degree oit particuiarity, we realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. Nille therefore reserre the right and privilege of changing the orm of the details ot con struction or otherwise altering the arrangementot the correlated parts without departing trom the spirit of the invention or the scope ot the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention -what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is l. ln combination with the serrated edge rulers ot a metal cutter, an adjusting stop slidabie on one cti said rulers, said stop comprising a vertical body having a longitudinal slot :in the bottoni thereof cooperating `with said ruler, a spring controlled lever pivoted to the body, Vthe lower, inner tace et said lever having serrated teeth adapted to engage the serrated edge of the ruler whereby said stop may be set at predetermined positions, and a micrometer gauging stop associated with the other one ot said rulers.
2. ln combination with the serrated edge rulers ot a metal cutter, an adjusting stop slidable on one oit said rulers, said stop comilirising a vertical body having a longitudinal slot in the bottom thereot cooper ating rith said ruler, a lever pivoted to the. outer tace oi? said stop, said lever having serrated teeth on the lower inner face thereoil adapted to engage with the serrated teeth ot the ruler, and a spring interpos d between the upper end ot the lever and said body to inirnially maintain the serA rated teeth in engagement, a stop on tne other ruler, a yoke carried by said stop, and adjusting screws in said yoke.
