Description

G.- BOIVIN" Stifienerfor Boots and Shoes.
No.162,525 Patented April27,1875.
yaw-st.- Inventor.
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHDTO-L TH.39&41 PARK PLACEJLY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFro GUILLAUME BOIVIN, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT lN STIFFENERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,525, dated April 27, 1375; application filed February 5, 1875.
designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists in cutting stiffencrs of the configuration shown in the drawings, with five projecting ears and a recess, so as to secure more room for sewing and peggin g, and for the back seam, and yet making the curve and edges of one stiffener conform to those of another, so as to economize material in cutting the stiffeners from the stock.
Figure 1 shows the stiffener bent and shaped for the boot or shoe. Fig. 2 shows the stiffener as formerly cut. Fig. 3 shows the old method of cutting the stiffeners from the stock. Fig. 4 shows my stiffener with the five points and one depression, and Fig. 5 shows the manner of cutting my stiffener-s from the stock.
The double dotted lines show where the stiflener is bent under the heel, and the portions I add to the old forms used before my invention, and as seen in Fig. 2, which did not leave enough material for pegging or sewing, as it did not cover the heel far enough under it. Much material was lost by the old method, as may be seen in Fig. 3, where the space g was lost. 1 remedy these defects by leaving the projecting cars a b, as seen in Figs. 1 and 4:. By giving more curve to the lower and upper part of the stiffener, I obtain the material for the ears, as seen at a b. I further provide, if desired, for more space for pegging or sewing, by leaving a point, e, and I obtain the material for it by leaving a corresponding recess or deflection, f, in the upper part of the stiffener. The point is seen in position at c, Fig. 1.
I curve and combine the ends 0 d of the stiffeners, so that by cutting them reversed, end to end,as seen in Fig. 5, they correspond, and littleifanymaterialislost. The savingis considerable, and the superior quality of the work is better secured than before. The outlines given to stitfeners in cutting them after my method may be varied in many different manners; but
What I claim as my invention is-- A stiffener for boots and shoes, provided with the different parts a b 0 (Z c f, the whole substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
The above specification of said invention signed and witnessed at Montreal this 7th day of December, A. D. 1874.
Gr. BOIVIN.
