CONTROLSYSTEMI FOR PRINTING PRESSES. r
Application led July 11, 1925. `Serial No. 42,899.
This invention relates to control systems for multi-unit printing presses and simllar mechanisms.
In the application of Thomas H. Rodman and Paul W. Darlington, Serial No. 646,052, filed June 18, 1923, there is disclosed a control system for multi-unit printing presses including a plurality of separately operated circuit controlling switches for effecting control commutat-ions to suit various driving combinations between the driving and driven units.
The present invention has among its objects to provide a system of the aforesaid character including a single operating means adapted to act on all of the circuit controlling Aswitches to veffect selected settings thereof to suit the various drive combinations.
Another object is to provide means of the aforesaid character including a control part adapted to be' set indifferent positionsfor selection of control connnutations and power operated means under the control of said `part for operating the switches to effect the selected control commutation v Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter, appear.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention which will now be described, it being understood that the embodiment illustrated is susceptible of modification without departing from the spirit andk scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1.is aschematic View of a plurality0 of driven units and drives therefor to which control commutating means em.- bodying the invention may be applied; Fig. 2 is a schematic and diagrammatic viewL of the driven units and the driving motors therefor together with commutat-able control means for the motors;
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing in detail means for commutating the con `nections between one element of acontrol station and the control panels .of three drives; e
Fig. 4 is a simplified side elevational view of the operatmg'means for the commutatng switches `shown in Fig. 2;
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of certain of he operating cams illustrated in Fig. 4; an l Fig. 7 is an end elevational view of certain of the control parts illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to Fig. l, the same shows a driven machine which may be assumed to be a vprinting press comprising twelve printing units A to L and folders 1 to 4, one for each group of three printing units. Each printing unit may be assumed to be designed to print eight pages, and each group of three printing units and the folder therefor is provided: with ai doublemotor drive, although it is, of course, to be undeistood that the number of units in each group may be either decreased or increased :is desired.
As illustrated the group of printing units A, B Vand C and folder 1 has a drive M comprising a large motor 6 and a small motor 7, said motors driving through a chain 8 and sprockets 9 and 10, a countershaft 11 having a slip gear 12 to mesh with a gear 13 on shaft 14 to which the aforementioned driven units and folder are connected. The printing units A, B and C and folder 1 are each connected to shaft 14 by a set of bevel gears, one gear of each set being slidable on said shaft to disconnect its respective unit from said shaft. The remaining groups of printing units and folders are respectively provided with like motor drives M2, M3 and M* which drive through like connections the shafts 15, 16 and 17 of said groups. Each motor drive is preferably designed to be capable of driving as many as six printing units and one folder and the shafts 14. 15.. 16 and 17 are provided with couplings there# between and between sections thereof whereby the motors may be so employed, and, moreover, employed alternatively.
More specifically, the shafts 14 and 15 have a coupling 18 therebetween, while the shafts 15 and 16 have a coupling 19 therebetween and shafts 16 and 17 have a coupling 2() therebetween. Further, the shaft 15 is interrupted between units D and E and has its respective gear 13 rotatably mounted on one section thereof to be coupled to the two sections of said shaft selectively or to both by couplings 21 and 22. Similarly, theshaft 16 is interrupted between units H and I and its respective gear 13 is revolubly mounted on one sectionand provided with couplings 23 and 24 to connect the same to the two sections of said shaft selectively or to both.
The commutatable driving connections described enable the units to be operated as four sextuple presses each to print a twenty four page paper, or alternatively, as three octuple presses -each to print a thirty two page paper, or alternatively as two dessuple presses each to print a forty page paper, or alternatively as two sextuple presse". each to print a forty eight page paper. Moreover each of the aforementioned presses of four or more units may be driven by either of a plurality of drives selectively. From the foregoing, it is apparent that the aforedescribed combinations may` be tabulated as follows:
Referring to Fig. 2, .the same shows the printing units folders and drives together with control panels C1, C2, C3 and C for the drives M1 to M, respectively; c ontrol stations S, on'e of each printing un1t and folder, and switches 3Q to 42, inclusive, for
commutations, certain of thestations must be connected to any one of three drives.
Each of the switches 30 to 42 has two positions to which it may be moved selectively, one position being indicated by the full line extending obliquely from the right hand side thereof and the other position being indicated by the dotted oblique line. Each switch when positioned as indicated by the full line, connects the cable leading thereto from the left to the cable, if any, leading from the upper end thereof, while in the absence of the latter cable the switch disconnects the former cable from circuit. On the other hand, each switch when positioned as indicated by the dotted line. connects the cable leading thereto from the left to the cable leading from its lower end.
to be commutatcd asbetween one control sta-V tion and any -three control panels. The switch .35 in the position shown connects the station S to switch 36 and the latter connects said station to control panel C3. On the other hand by moving switch 36 to its dotted line position the circuit from the control station may be shifted to panel C1 and by moving the switch 35 to its dotted line position, said circuit may be shifted tov panel C". Thus Fig. 3 in `conjunction with Fig. 2 serves to disclose fully all electrical commutations necessary to meet the requirements of the mechanical commutations aforedescribed.
The commutating switches 30 to 42 inclu- :sxive vare..arranged side .by sideandeach is biased to its dotted line position indicated in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 4, the operating member of each of the cominutating switches has an operating cam associated therewith, said cams being designated by reference character a and all of the same being fixed to a shaft 45. Shaft 45 is rotatable and has 13 angular positions corresponding to the drive combinations hereinbefore tabulated. The several cams are so shaped that when shaft 45 is in a position corresponding to a given drive com ination, proper setting of the commutating switches is obtained. For example, in the foregoing tabulation press E is connected to drive 1 in combinations 6,
8, 10 and 12 to drive 2 in combinations 1, 3, 4, 7,'9, 11 and 13 and to drive 3 in combinations 2 and 5. To provide the proper control commutations for these drive combinations, commutating switches 35 and 36 are provided with cams which are shaped as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Cam 35 is provided with projections for raising the operating member 'of its respect-ive switch in po` sitions 2, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 of shaft 45, while cam 36a is provided with projections for raising the operating member of its respective switch in positions 2 and 5 of said sha-ft. It is thus apparent that in positions 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 13, commutating switch 35 is in its dotted line position Fig. 3 to connect station S of press to E to the panel C2. In positions 2 and 5 of shaft 45 both of the coinmutating switches and 36 are held in their full liiie position Fig. 3, to connect station S of press E to Lpanel C3, whilein positions 6, 8, l0 and 12 commutatingswitch 35 is held in its full line position and commutating switch 36 in its dotted line position to connect station S of press E to control panel C1. The other operating cams are designed in the same manner as the aforedescribed cams to hold their respective coniinutating switches in the proper position for the drive combinations hereinbefore tabulated.
Shaft is adapted to be driven by a iliotor M having anarmature AA and a series field winding F. vMotor M, is `supplied with current from lines L1 and L2 through the medium of an electroina etically operated double pole switch 47 an the` energizing circuit of said switch is controlled by a selector device 48. Selector device 48 includes a contact element 49 fixed to shaft 45 anda cooperating selector element 50 rotatably mounted on said shaft. As best shown on Fig. 7 contact element 49 has a cooperating contact finger 51, and'is provided with an insulated section -52.` Selector member 50 gree or movement of the selector element 50. In other words the insulated portion 5.2 will always interrupt the energizing circuit of switch 47 when the shaft 45 is brought to an angular position corresponding to the angular position of selector element 50.
