It is known to support the whip-roll in a loom so that it will oppose elastic resistance to the pressure of the warp and thus pro- ]duce the following advantages, among others, over whip-rolls rigidly supported in the usual way, to wit: reduction of strain on the warp threads incident to the sudden impact of the reed with the cloth and to the "shed forming 'movements and other conditions, and the weaving of the cloth so that its texture shall be uniform and, in particular, without so-called barre marks or the like involving undue spacing of the weft threads or other marks or blemishes, attributable usually to variations in tension on the sheet of warp and woven goods.
The principal object of this invention is toprovide an attachment for looms embodying anelastically supported whip-roll and which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction and also readily applicable to any existing loom, and which shall further be capable of ad ustment by simple manipulations so that the proper elastic resistance may be afforded according to the requirements of the particular cloth being Woven and other conditions. 7

1 is the loom frame, 2 the breast-beam, and 3 the harness adapted to be manipulated by any suitable means in the usual way to form sheds in the warp A for receiving the weft or filling. To support, advance and maintain tension on the sheet of warp A and woven fabric B there are. as usual, with the breast-beam, the take-up or cloth-beam l, the sand-roller 5, the whip-roll 6, the warpbeam 7 having a sheave or pulley 8 fixed to rotate therewith, and arope or equivalent flexible brake 9 wound around the pulley 8 and having its ends depending and carrying, respectively, the heavy and light weights 10 and 11, the latter being adapted to touch the floor 12 from time to time to thereby relax the brake and produce the necessary slippage thereof so that'the weight 10 remains at a substantially constant elevation; there are also the guide members 13 for properly directing the cloth with respect to the sand-roller and cloth-beam.
The structure hereinafter described and employed to support the whip-roll is duplicated, one being secured to each side of the frame 1. Given means to maintain taut the sheet of warp and fabric A-B, as 54: and 8 and the latters braking means, its function is to yieldingly support the-warp-roll against the tension of said sheet. I
This structure includes a casting formed with a horizontal bar or plate 1 1 having two depending legs 15, eachleg being vertically slotted as at 16. Mounted upon this bar or plate is a plate-spring 17 which has one end formed as an upwardly open hook 17 a and at its other end portion bent downwardly as at 17 and terminating in a foot 17 which is substantially parallel with the body portion of the spring, to wit, the por-' tion to which the character 17 is applied The terminal or foot 17 of the plate-spring is secured flatwise on and to one end of the bar 14: by a cap screw 18. The trunnion 6 of the whip-roll is adapted to. rest in the hook or socket 17 Between the bar or plate 1a and the straight horizontal portion of the plate-spring is interposed a block 19 which is preferably recessed at.19 on its under side to receive the bar. affords a bearing for the plate-spring and is adapted to be adjusted lengthwise of the bar and plate-spring, and for clamping itwhere adjusted there is a clevis-.20 which straddles the block and is engaged in lateral grooves 19 therein and has its ends extend- 1ng freely through a cross-piece 21 and also threaded and equipped with tightening nuts 22.
Each structure, described as above, is secured to a side of the loom frame by providing the latter with horizontal slots 23 to receive bolts 24 which extend through these slots and the vertical slots 16 of the depending legs of the bar or plate 14. Thus each structure can be adjusted forward and back or up and down in the loom frame.
It will be understood that according as the block of each of said structures is adjustedforward or back so the tension of the corresponding plate-spring will be varied, this adjustment being desirable so that the This block resistance of the plate-spring may he varied tlCCOltliDQITO the requirements otthe particular cloth being woven and other conditional.
Having thus fully described my invention what I" claim and desire to secure by Letters Patents is:
1.
