UNET ED STATES REGINALD C. REQUA, OF COLD SRING HARBOR, NEW YORK.'
LITERARY SAVINGS DEVICE.
Application filed December 31, 1925.
My present invention has to do with devices for making attractive and for thereby encouraging the systematic habit of saving; and it has for its general object the provision of a combined book and coin container or holder, the coin holder initially constituting' a part of the cover' of the book, 'and being designed to lend increased weight to the lower portion of the cover so as to assure standing of the book on edge in open state, and being susceptible of ready detachment from the major port-ion of the cover and adapted, by reason of the original crease at the back of the cover, to be folded upon itself and conveniently placed in an envelope of conventional size.
The subject matter of my novel book, carried on the major portion of the cover and on the several leaves between the cover' will be matter consonant with thrift so as to imbue and keep constantly in the mind of a child the advantages that accrue from systematic savings.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication:-
Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating` the book constituting the preferred embodiment.
of my invention as the same appears when partly opened.
Figure 2 is a face view of the interior of the book when fully opened.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section taken in the vplane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by arrow.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel book comprises a cover 1 of pasteboard or other appropriate material, creased at 2 to afford a back and to render possible the compactclosing of the book as suggested in Figure 1 as well as the substantially complete opening of the book as indicated in' Figure 2. i The book also comprises leavesV 3 of appropriate material, secured in any approved manner in the cover, but preferably, for the sake of cheapness, to the back 2 of the cover, through the medium of staples 4l or the like, as cle-arly shown in Figure'2.V
Manifestly within the purview of my invention, the major portions of the sides of Serial No. 78,591.
the cover may be provided with pictures and of the cover or the leaves or some of the leaves will be provided with pictures or text germano to the subject of thrift, this being of the essence of my invention.
1n the initial production of my novel book, a portion of the cover' 1 is set aside for coin holding purposes, and in this resides the gist of my invention. The said eoin holding portion of the cover 1 is located at the lower end of the cover and is formed by a portion el, integral with the major portion of the cover but divided therefrom through the medium of a` weakened line 5 which extends throughout the width of the cover. The said portion is provided with a crease 2 continuous with the before mentioned crease 2 so that the portion d will lend itself to ready closing and opening of the book, and will also lend itself when detached from the major portion of the cover to ready insertion in an envelope of conventional size.
To the attainment of my invention, the cover portion l is separated from the major portion of the cover as stated, so that the portion el rests entirely below the leaves 23, and the said cover portion et is equipped with coin holders 6. Said holders 6 l ave opposed ends separated by a space 7 of V-shape, and are folded on the line 8 inwardly upon the inner' side of the portion el. I would also have it understood at this point that the flaps or coin holders 6 are permanently connected by a suitable adhesive to the inner side of the portion el subsequently to the folding before alluded to, so that the portion l and the flaps 8 constitute double thicknesses calculated to increase the stiffness and strength of the lower portion of the cover as well as to leud increased weight to the cover so that the saine ill stand upright when partially opened. Each of the coin holders 6 is characterized by a plurality of coin receiving apertures 9, and by integral straps 10 which extend diametrically across the apertures 9 and have for their function the detention of coin in the apertures 9 and against casual displacement therefrom.
Manifestly when the holders 6 are charged with coins, the book cover will be weighted at the lower end thereof, and this when the book is stood upright in partially opened state, may be depended upon to maintain the book in said position, and against falling. i My invention contemplates the use of the book during` the practice of saving, the coins being deposited one by one in the apertures 9. My invention also contemplates the detachment of the cover portion 4rand the coin holders thereon from the major portion of the cover by cutting or tearing on the weakened line 5; the major portion of the book being retained after the said severance for the purpose of entertaining a child after the usual manner of bool-Is. ln the further carrying out of my invention, the portion 4 after the detachment described, is folded upon itself so that the coins in the apertures 9 are between the portion a, whereupon the portion l with the coins therein may be conveniently placed in a bank book, or may be placed in a conventional envelope for transmission to a depository.
As appears in Figure 1, the outer side of the portion 4t of the book cover is adapted to carry an advertisement such as the name and location of a savings bank, plus instructions regarding` the use of the book in systematic saving, and the desirability of depositing the full quota of coins when the quota is attained in the bank.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my novel book, it will be readily appreciated that the book is but little more expensive than any other book of corresponding grade, and that the book as a whole is fabricated of the materials generally in.- corporated in books, the savings feature being carried out without the employment of any extraneous materials whatever.
I have entered into a. detailed description of the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the construction as illustrated and described, my invention being delined by my appended claims within the scope of which changes in structure and arrangement inay be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A device for encouraging and promoting systematic savings, said device being in the general form of a book and comprising a cover folded to afford a back and leaves disposed in said cover and attached to the back portion thereof; the lower edges of the leaves being spaced from the lower edge of the cover, and the cover being provided with a weakened line substantially coincident with the lower edges of the leaves, and being also provided with inwardly folded coin holding portions disposed below the leaves and below said weakened line and attached to the inner side of the cover portion below the leaves and weakened line, and the contiguous ends of the said coin holding portions being separated by an intervening space of gen-eral V-shape, whereby the coin holders are prevented from interfering with the compact closing of the book, and the cover portion carrying the coin holders is susceptible of detachment from the major part of tne cover after which the said coin carrying portion may be folded upon itself to enclose within the same the coins in the coin holders, and the said book carrying matter germane to thrift.
2. A device for encouraging and promoting systematic saving, in the form of a book, the said device having a cover and leaves with edges spaced inwardly from an edge of the cover and also having coin holding means carried by the cover portion between the leaf edges and a cover edge and detachable from the major portion of the cover, and the said book carrying matter germane to thrift. Y 3. A device for encouraging and promotmg systematic savings, said device being in the general form of a book and comprising a cover folded to afford a back, and leaves disposed in said cover and attached to the back portion thereof; the lower edges of the leaves being spaced from the lower edge of the cover, and the cover being provided with a weakened line substantially coincident with the lower edges of the leaves, and being also provided with coin holding portions disposed below the leaves and below said weakened line, and the coin holding cover portion carrying the coin holders being susceptible of detachment from the major part of the cover after which the said coin carrying portion may be folded upon itself to enclose within the same the coins in the coin holders, and said book carrying matter germane to thrift.
4t. A device for encouraging and promoting systematic savings, in the form of a book, the said device having a cover and leaves with edges spaced inwardly from an edge of the cover, and also having coin holding means carried by the cover portion between the leaf edges and a cover edge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
