Description

J. E. KNOPP BOX CLOSER April 19, 1927. v 5,033
Filed on. '2 1925 Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
UNITED STATES JOHN E. KNOPP, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
BOX CLOSER.
Application filed October 26, 1925. Serial No. 64,820.
My invention relates to a box closer and more particularly to means for holding the lid on a suit box or other like container otherwise than by tying with cord in the 1 "ml manner, the principal object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive closer which may be easily and quickly applied to the box, willhold the box securely, and is attractive in appearance.
in accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a suit box to which a closer embodying my improvement is applied.
Fig. 2 illustrates the method 0t applying the closer to the box.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the blank from which the closer is formed.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the closer in open position.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the closer as it appears when knocked down.
Generically the closer consists of a strip of box board preferably of the same texture, gauge and color as the box with which it is to be used, and shaped to a tubular body of slightly greater dimensions than the box, in order that it may slip over the box as a band, the top and bottom of the closer being of different widths to form diagonal mouths of greater width than the thickness of the box, in order that the closer may be easily applied to the box.
Specifically the closer is constructed from a strip 1 of box board, formed to a bottom section 2, a top section 3 of less width but *5 the same length as the body portion, a connecting neck 4; of reducing width, and end flaps 5 and 6 of a combined width equal to that of the connecting neck 4, the strip being scored at the ends of the top and bottom body portions so that it may be folded to form the rectangular band (Fig. 4) with the edges of the flaps 5 and 6 abutting and connected by an adhesive strip 7 to form an integral structure. The strip being formed as described, constitutes a band having inclined end edges forming flaring mouths of greater width than the width of the band.
A closer constructed as described may be easily applied to a suit box by tilting the band relative to the end of the box (Fig. 2) so that the end of the box may slip easily into the mouth of the band, drawing the band over the box and straightening the hand during the pull-on movement, so that the top and bottom body portions of the band will lie fiat against the lid and bottor of the box. WVith the band in place the lid of the box is held firmly to the body portion over a substantial area, and the box firmly and securely closed, thereby not only securing a more substantial closure of the box, but also avoiding the use of cord or string for holding the cover to the body of the box.
It is apparent that the band may be printed with the name of a merchant or with other advertising matter, and may have value from that standpoint, although its principal value is in its more eliicient closure of the box to which it is applied.
It is further apparent that by means of the scoring, the band may be creased at its edges for convenience in storing and ship- What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is The combination with a box having a top. a bottom and side walls, of a flat strip of box board having parallel and oblique edge portions scored transversely to form rectangular top, and bottom portions and tapering side wall portions, the ends of the strip being secured together to form a pre-formed, stifl' walled band open at opposite ends thereof, narrower than the length of the box and substantially rectangular in cross section, slidable into position on said box to closely engage the top, bottom and side walls of the box to hold the same closed, said top and bottom portions of said band being of different widths to provide clearance for the box to enter the band with a tilting movement of the band.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN E. KNOPP.
