ASSIGNOB TO BRIGGS MANUFACTURING SUPPORT FOR DOOR BUMPERS.
Application m on char 8, 1923. Serial No. 667,433.
This invention relates to vehicle bodies and refers more particularly to supports for door buffers and the An object of the i post or pillar having portions t like. nventlon is to rovide a at form jambs for a plurality of doors andthat preferabl cooperate for tie post to support a plur able cushion members WlllCll' for said doors.
tling.
Another object is with a reinforcing member ality' of yieldform buffers de a reliable and ableof e jambs ble ofpreventing ratto provide'a strong and tured at a comparatively low cost.-
durable construction that can be manufac- With the above and other objects in view features of construction, combination and ar' rangement of parts appended claims.
Figure 1 is a as will be more In the accompanying drawing P- fragmentary side fully described and particularly pointed out in the elevation of a vehicle body embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional v1 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enl vation of the post 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a forcing member.
Referring now ew taken on line arged fragmentary elebodying'my invention; Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line y of such thickness that they frictionally endetail perspective view of one of the buffers;
Figure 6 is a perspect to the drawing in which:
like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
the numeral 1 desi body having a nates a motor vehicle meta lic post or pillar 2 a pair of doors 3 that are normally dis in closed position against opposite si the post.
T e post is prefer erably provided with tending forwardly projecting hape in cross-secbly provided with r flanges 5 which diverging sides 6 The rear wall 7 of the post is I is preferably channel-s that'is prefera laterally extending wings 0 connect into the forwardly tion and of the 0st. prefera ly formed 5 bly provided with and osed es of ably hollow and is prefportion 4 a longitudinally exthat eparately and is prefermarginal flanges 8 that jeam outwardly from ing openin are secured to the sides'6 adjacent to the rear edges thereof.
Located in the post, preferably about midway-of'its length, is a reinforcing member 9 therefor. This reinforcing member prefer ably extends transversely of the post and is preferabl formed from sheet metal which is bent as s own, providing a air of spaced pockets 10 having marginal auges 11 that are secured to the sides 6 of the ppst. Thesepockets preferably register wit elongated open' s 12 in the post at the opposite sides thereo and sides 6 and anges 5 to support a pair of buffers 13 for the doors. Each bu-fier preferably consists of a pair of elongated resilient cushion members 14 that are preferably spaced apart so that portions thereof project slightly above and below the edges of the openings 12. Wear plates 15 are preferably provided between the cushion members preferably return-bent as shown to provide spaced arms 16 that retain the cushion members firmly in engagement with the "top an bottom of the pockets. These arms are preferably bent in opposite directions at their outer ends as s own at 17 and are adapted to receive elongated tonguesl8 prothe forward edges of the doors. The tongues are. preferably constructed of sheet metal and are preferably rattling gage the arms 16 and thus prevent a when the doors are closed. ive view of therein-' If desired, the frictional tween the tongues and arms may engagement bebe such that the buffers will be capable of holding the doorsin c1o:ed position.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readil. apparent, I desire to have it underst that 1 do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such cha n es ma be resorted to when desired as all wit in the scope of what is claimed.
What I'claim as my invention is :-r-
1. In a vehicle body, a hollow post havinga transverselyextendin one wall thereof, of a'sheet metal rein orcing member for the post havin a pocket cooperating with a wallof the post to form a housing, one -end of said pocket being open and in communication referably cooperate with the of the buffers and are he combination with.
with the opening in the post, door butters in the housing, said bufiers being spaced apart to receive a projection on a door, and a Wear plate between said butler members normally holding the same spaced apart against 0pposite Walls of the pocket.
2. In a vehicle body, a hollow post having openings in opposite sides thereof, a reinforcing member extending transversely of the post and having spaced pockets inside the post registering with said openings and having marginal flanges secured to the adjacent walls of said post, said pockets being of a greater area than said openings, whereby portions of said reinforcing 'member overlap the adjacent edge portion of said openings and thereby providing housings with the post for door buffers andthe like.
3. In a vehicle body, the combination with a hollow post having transversely extending openings in opposite Walls thereof, of a reinforcing member extending transversely of.
the post having spaced pockets cooperating with opposite walls of the post to form housings, one end of said pockets being open and communicating with the openings in the post, and yieldable cushion elements in said housings.
4. In a vehicle body the combination with suitable doors and tongues projecting therefrom, of a door post provided with alongitudinally extending channel-shaped portion and diverging side Walls, a metallic reinforcing member extending transversely of the post having pockets cooperating with said diverging sides to form housings for door buffers, and lateral Wings connecting the sides of the channel-shaped portion to the diverging sides of the post, said wings and diverging Walls having communicating openings therein for receiving said tongues.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. Y
HERMAN C. MAISE.
