MACHINE FOR OPERATING ON LASTS.

This invention relates to machines for operating on the wooden lasts customarily used in making shoes, and is illustrated as embodied in a machine for drilling a hole through the rear end of such a last in a direction substantially in prolongation of the axis of a heel applied to a shoe on the last.
In my co-pending application Serial No. 561901, filed May 18, 1922 there is described and claimed a machine for use in clamping reels to lasted shoes by means of headed screw fasteners each of which passes through a hole in the rear end of a last and through the heel seat of the shoe into the heel in such a manner as to clamp each last and shoe and heel firmly together to permit finishing operations to be performed on the shoe while the heel attaching adhesive is drying. i
An object of the present invention is to provide means for preparing lasts for use in clamping heels in this manner. From this point of view, the invention comprises a drill and a work holder herein shown as having means to engage the top and bottom of the rear end of a last constructed and arranged to grasp and hold the last in front of a drill in such a manner that the drill will bore a hole through the last for the reception of a screw fastenersuch as described above. Preferabl the means for engaging the bottom of the last is made in the form of a drill guiding sleeve and in the illustrated embodiment of the invention this sleeve is formed with a nose constructedand arranged to seat in the holes which are usually found approximately at the centers of. the .metal .heelplates of lasts so as to guide the drill through these holes. In the embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, a motor is mounted on a suitable base with the drill attached to its armature shaft and the above described work holder is mounted for sliding movement axially of the drill and comprises a pivotally mounted device formed with a jack pin and with asurface at right angles to the jackpin for engaging the top ofthe last,-together witha forked member arranged to straddle the rear end of the last and yieldingly urged against the last across said surface.

The machine shown in the drawings comprises-a base 10 carrying adjustable standards 12 on which is mounted a motor 14. A last-preparing drill 16 is held in a suitable chuck 18 mounted on the armature shaft of the motor.
Each last is presented to the drill 16 by a work holder 20 mounted to slide axially of the drill on a guide 22 carried by lugs 24 on base 10, and connected to a pivoted hand operating lever 26 by a link 28. The hand. lever 26 is pivoted on a bracket 30 which may be mounted on an extension of the base 10 but which is shown in the accompanying drawings as being separately bolted to a supporting bench.
Each last which is to be operated on by the machine usually has a heel plate 32 formed with a hole 34 approximately at its center. In order to direct the relative movement of drill 16 and last L so that'the drill will operate through the hole 34, the work holder 20 is formed with a vertical post 36 through which is threaded a drill guiding sleeve 38 formed with a hand wheel 40 and with a nose 42 in the shape of the frustum of a cone so that it can be inserted in and guide the drill 16 througlnthe hole 34 in the heel plate 32 (lo-operating with the drill guiding sleeve 38 in grasping and holding each last L is a work positioning device 44 shown in detail in Figp3. This device is pivoted at 46 on a plunger 48 adjustably clamped by a bolt 50in the upper end ofa post 52 rising from the workholder 20, The work positioning device 44 comprises a block 54 having a surface 56 to engage the top of each last and having W58 formed h a houlder 6t which supports a jack pin 62 by engagement with an annular flange (it on the jack pin. The jack pin 62 is clamped in adjusted position in slot 58 by tightening a nut 66 which is mounted on the threaded lower end of the jack pin and which engages the bottom of the block The block 54 is also formed with an undercut channel in which is slidably mounted a forked member 68 arranged to straddle the rear end of a last, as shown in Fig. 1, and be yieldingly urged against the last by a coil spring 70 attached at one end to a pin 72 carried by the forked member and at the other end to a pin T l carried by block 5%. Movement of the forked member 68 under the influence of spring 70 is adjustably limited by a set screw 76 mounted in a lug 78 on the forked member 68 and arranged to engage a lug 80 formed on the bottom of block Set.
In operation, a last is placed in the machine by placing its rear edge in the fork of member 68 and pushing this member back until the thimble hole of the last can be seated over the jack pin 62 with the top of the last in engagement with surface 56. The spring 70 is thus put under tension and the rear top portion of the last is gripped between the forked member 68 and the last pin. The sleeve 38 is then turned forwardly by means of the hand wheel 40 until the nose 42 is seated in the hole 34 in the heel plate 32 of the last, the work positioning device ll being tilted about its pivot 46 in order to bring the hole 3% into alinement with the sleeve 38 Thus the sleeve 38 and the Work positioning device 44 co-operate to grasp and hold the last ready for the opertion of the drill 16. The hand lever 26 is then moved toward the left from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, so that drill 16 is guided by the sleeve 38 through the hole 34 in the heel plate 32 to form a hole 82 extending in a direction to coincide substantially with the axis of a heel applied to a shoe on the last and at an inclination to the surfaces engaged by the supporting members as and la. The exact position of the top end of the hole 82 is determined by the adjustment of the jack pin 62 in the slot 58. By adjusting the ack pin toward or from the pivotal axis of the work positioning device, the angular relation of the last to the drillguiding sleeve, and therefore the direction in which the fastener-receiving aperture extends through the last may be varied in accordance with the particular style of heel which is to be applied to the shoe made on the last.
\Vhile one embodiment of my invention has been illustrated and described, it is not my intention to limit its scope thereby or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims,
operating devices for engaging respectively the top and the heel-seat surface ofa last and constructed and arranged to clamp the last between them and to position the last in front of the drill, one of said devices being constructed and arranged for tilting 7 adjustment relatively to the other of said devices, and means for relatively moving the drill and the work holder axially of the drill to form a hole in the last.
2. A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having,'in combination, a power-driven drill, a work holder comprising a device for engaging the topof a last and a drill-guiding sleeve having a nose to seat in a hole at the center of a heel plate on the last, said device and sleeve co-operating to hold the last and being constructed and arranged to position the last in front of the drill with the axis of the drill intersecting a plane extending longitudinally of the last and perpendicular to the last bottom, one of said devices being constructed and arranged to grip the last and being movable to vary the position of the last in said plane, and means for relatively moving the drill and the work holder axially of the drill to cause the drill to pass through the sleeve and through the last to form a hole 'in the last opening at one end substantially at the center of the hole in the heel plate.
3. A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having, in combination, a. power-driven drill, a carriage sliding axially of the drill, a last holding device on the carriage to engage and predetermine the position of the top of a last, said device being nivotally mounted for tilting adjustment about an axis intersecting the axis of the drill, and a device 011 the carriage to engage the center of the heel seat surface of no the last and position it substantially in the line of the axis of the drill.
4. A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having, in combina-' tion, a power-driven drill, a carriage sliding axially of the drill, a device pivoted on the carriage for swinging adjustment about an axis perpendicular to and intersecting the axis of the drill to engage and predetermine the position of the top of a last, and a threaded drill-guiding sleeve adjustably mounted on the carriage with its axis substantially in alinement with the axis of the drill, the sleeve being constructed and arranged to engage the heel seat surface of the last substantially at its center and co-operate with said device in holding the last and move it with the carriage axially of the drill to form a hole opening at the center of the heel seat surface.
5. A machine for forming holes in the rear ends of lasts having, in combination, a base, a motor mounted on the base, a drill mounted on the armature shaft of the motor, a carriage sliding on the base axially of the drill, a last holding device pivoted on the carriage for movement about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the drill to engage and predetermine the position of the top of the last, and a device on the carriage to engage the center of the heel seat surface of the last to position it substantially in the line of the axis of the drill.

A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having, in combination, a Work holder, a drill-guiding sleeve mounted in the Work holder and formed with a nose to seat in a hole substantially at the cent-er of the heel plate of a last, and a last positioning device carried by the Work holder and engaging the top of the last and centering it with respect to the drill-guiding sleeve, the sleeve and said device being relatively rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve to position the last With the axis of the sleeve extending in a direction to coincide substantially with the axis of a heel applied to a shoe on the last.
7. A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having, in combination, a Work holder. a drill-guiding sleeve mounted in the Work holder and formed to engage a last substantially at the center of the heel seat, a last positioning device carried by the WOIk holder for centering the top of the last With respect to the drillguiding sleeve, said device having a jack pin .to seat in the thimble hole of the last, and a mounting for the positioning device constructed and arranged to permit movement of said device about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve to position the last With the axis of the sleeve extending in a direction to coincide substantially With and arranged to engage the heel seat of a last, and a pivotally-mounted positioning device carried by the Work holder and having a jack pin to seat in the thimble hole of the last and a surface at right angles to the pin to engage the top of the last and a forked member straddling the rear end of the last and yieldinglv urged across said surface against the last for co-operating with the jack pin to grip the last, said positioning device being adjustable to vary the angular relation of the last to the heel-seat engaging member, and the heel-seat engaging member and said device being relatively movable to grasp the last and hold it in angular-1y adjusted position.
10. A machine for forming holes through the rear ends of lasts having, in combination, a drill, a Work holder, a drill-guiding sleeve mounted in the Work holder and formed with a nose to seat in a hole in the heel plate of a last, and a pivotally mounted positioning device carried by the Work holder and having a jack pin to seat in the thimble hole of the last, said sleeve and said device'being relatively movable to position and hold the last in a predetermined angular relation to the axis of the sleeve and said jack pin being adjustable relatively to the pivotal axis of the Work holder to vary the angular relation of the last to the axis of the sleeve.
