This ,invention relates to new improvenents in ,barrel locking mechanism Stor breakdown guns. f v
The primary object -of'th'e invention is the provision of a barrel locking mechanism which be manually thrown into an unlocked position and will be held in such position by an automatic trip member.
A further object of the invention is the provision ofa trip which will automatically move into a. position for holding a barrel locking mechanism in its unlocked position While the barrel breech is open and will automatically move into a barrel lock releasing position when the barrel breech is closed.
Gther objects and advantages ot' the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a portion otl a gun frame having mounted therein a barrel locking mechanism and an automatic trip for holding the said mechanism in its unlocked position while the barrel breech is open,
Figure 2 is a similarI view to Fig. 1 but shows the barrel locking member in its unlocked position and held in such position by a trip member, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view ot' the trip member shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose ot' illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates a gun frame having the bottom wall 6 and end wall 7 forming a barrel breech receiving portion.
Rotatably mounted within the frame 5 is a barrel locking bolt 8 which is of the rotataable type and is rotated by means of the yoke 9 which is carried by the pivotally mounted post 10, the said yoke 9 having an arm l1 which projects into a socket 12 formed in the inner end of the bolt S. This bolt 8 is formed with a slot 13 which communicates with a second slot 14 forming a barrel locking portion 15, in the said bolt.
The bolt 8 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 16 which is formed in the periphery of the bolt and at the diametrically opposite point to the slot 13. It
is to be understood that this groove 16 will be positioned at the lower side of 'the :bolt 8 when tihe latter is in its barrel unlocking position, as illustrated in Fig. z Sli'd'ably monntedin the lframe is fa substantially itl-shaped trip 1-,7 whichl has its lornger side, formed with -ra reduced lend 18 normally held in engagement with the periphery of the rotatable bolt 8 by the spring 19. The shorter side 20 of the trip 17 is arranged in alinement with a hole 21 formed in the bottom wall 6 of the barrel breech receiving portion of the frame 5.
It will now be seen that when the post is rotated for causing the barrel locking bolt 8 to be rotated to arrange its slot 13 on the upper side of the bolt, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the groove 16 in the periphery of the bolt 8 will have been moved into register with the reduced end 18 of the U-shaped trip 17 This upward movement of the trip 17 will groove 16 will permit the spring 19 to function to shift the trip bodily upwardly for moving the reduced end 18 into said groove. This upward movement of the strip 17 will cause the shorter side 20 oi the trip to project through the opening 21 in the frame wall 6 so that the end of the side 2O will be arranged inthe barrel breech receiving portion of the frame. It will be understood that after the bolt 8 has been rotated into its unlocked position, the trip 17 will not move into its bolt holdingposition until the barrel breech has been opened or moved out of the portion of the frame formed by the walls 6 and 7. lVhen the barrel breech is returned into the portion of the frame 5 formed to receive it, the barrel breech will engage the shorter side of the trip 17 and will force the entire trip downwardly for releasing the bolt 8.
It is desirable to have the bolt 8 automatically move into its barrel locking position when the barrel breech has engaged and shifted the trip 17. To bring about this movement of the bolt 6, a spring pressed cap 22 is provided` and bears against a ball 23 formed on the screw 24 and projecting from the side of the bolt 10. This spring pressed cap 22 will provide the desired power or force for returning the post 10, the yoke 9, and the bolt 8 into their barrel locking positions.
It is, to be understood that the form ot' this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoned claim. Having thus described the invention, I claim In a breech loading break-down gun, wherein the breech frame is provided with a rotary locking bolt rotating on an axis substantially parallel to the axis of the barrel, wherein a rocking spindle is journaled in the breech frame to the rear of the locking bolt, and wherein a pendulum-lever is hinged to the rocking spindle and has a ball and socket connection with the rotary locking bolt, an external recess in said rotary locking bolt, and a vertically slidable substantially U-shaped trip spring-pressed up* wardly to normally have the upper end of LOUIS P. SMITH.
